Barry Bonds and Martha Stewart
So Jason Giambi has admitted to receiving steroids from Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson. To anyone following the BALCO investigation - this is not a surprise.
Now there is doubt about whether records seized from BALCO and Greg Anderson's house may be used in court proceedings. One thing is sure though - with all the time and effort put into this investigation someone is going to have to see jail time to justify the expense.
That person just may end up being Barry Bonds.
Follow me on this.
We all know that our legal system is dodgy - especially when the defendants have the money for high powered attorneys. The BALCO stuff may get thrown out but one thing that is not dodgy is the truth. If Barry Bonds lied to the Feds under oath and they can prove it - he'll end up going to jail just like Martha Stewart.
Remember - Martha Stewart did not go to jail for insider trading (which is what the original investigation was about), she went to jail for lying to the Feds. Barry won't go to jail for taking steroids, he'll go to jail for lying about taking steroids.
Somebody has to be the fall guy here and Barry was a main target all along. Plus how sympathetic do you think a jury will be to Barry? About as sympathetic as a jury was to Martha maybe?
Even if all the charges are dropped and nobody sees jail time - Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi (and to a lesser degree Gary Sheffield - although I don't know why Sheffield gets to skate through all this) will be held accountable by the court of public opinion. The Black Sox were acquited in their court case but they still are stigmatized to this day (and with good reason). Barry Bonds will go down in history as just as talented as Ty Cobb but just as big a prick.
Oh and another thing - as a Red Sox fan I can say with a clear conscience that I'm glad that bad things are happening to Jason Giambi now. It was his two steroids aided home runs in game 7 in 2003 that kept the Red Sox from the World Series. Cheaters never prosper Jason. Cheaters never prosper!
What I'd like to see is a top player who has done things the right way and was a free agent in 2001 sue Giambi. The case being that Giambi took money off his plate by using illegal performance enhancers to sign the biggest off season contract that year. Giambi didn't set the market so much as take the Yankees out of play which hurt the bidding on the other free agents. I want the clean players to go after the dirty players. I want blood on the streets. I want names named!
I know that this will never happen because illegal steroid use is/was so wide spread and MLB is very PR conscious. This is now at least three steroids tainted MVP awards. It still ticks me off.
What really pisses me off is this could actually help the Yankees. Giambi probably just wants to crawl in a hole and die right now. He'd probably be willing to take a buy-out of $.50 on the dollar and the Yankees can use that saved money to sign more big name players.
Fuck you Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds - fuck you and your enormous head too! You guys and the others who used steroids are nothing but parasites on the game of baseball.
