The passing of Jimmy Carter, while sad is not unexpected because of his advanced age. What was surprising was the passing of actress Linda Lavin. Michael Crichton

Author Michael Crichton was way ahead of most when it came to "fake news" and "junk science". This is quoted from a speech he gave in 2003:

...The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. Perceiving the truth has always been a challenge to mankind, but in the information age (or as I think of it, the disinformation age) it takes on a special urgency and importance.
We must daily decide whether the threats we face are real, whether the solutions we are offered will do any good, whether the problems we're told exist are in fact real problems, or non-problems....

Government Gangsters

Interesting backstory to the killing of the terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from the book:

"...that evening he [Donald Trump] had a movie night scheduled in the White House to watch Rambo: Last Blood with [among others]... actor John Voight.

...Baghdadi was soon chased down a tunnel and was cornered by highly trained special operations dog named Conan. Down in the tunnel, Baghdadi hit a dead end. He locked himself in a cell wearing a suicide vest and hid behind his children as a coward.

...Conan the dog was the only member of the team injured, and he was welcomed at the White House like a hero later."

When it came time to notify the nation of Baghdadi's death:

"...the First Lady stood up and said she thought we should do it [the press conference] right there in the Diplomatic Reception Room. She immediately started planning the whole event, moving the military flags in the room around and deciding on the camera angle. It was perfect staging."

Never realized that Melania was that involved. To be honest though what still sticks with me is Shane Gillis' impersonation of that night.

Patrick Collison on Historical Novels

Patrick Collison read 10 historical novels and jots down his thoughts. He makes some good points and I'm adding Middlemarch to my reading list based upon his recommendation.

I think he does undersell the ability for historical novels to really help you understand the history of the period you're reading about. For example my understanding of American history was greatly enhanced though reading of Gore Vidal's Burr or Lincoln. Same is true of Leon Uris's book Trinity which gave me great understanding of both Irish history and my Irish roots.

The more I think on it - many of the books I greatly enjoyed such as Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander, James Elroy's American Tabloid, or even Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October were historical novels at their core.

Reading certainly does you you harm and reading historical novels may actually do you some real good.

Government Gangsters

Currently reading Government Gangsters by Kash Pramod Patel. I picked up this book after he was nominated to be the next head of the FBI. And I'm glad I did.

"Then, when Republicans retake the White House these people must be held accountable. The next president must fire the top ranks of the FBI. Then, all those who manipulated evidence, hid exculpatory information, or in anyway abused their authority for political ends must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

The law must apply to everyone - even those who feel entitled to be some new wave Praetorian guard.

"...prosecutors should only prosecute real crimes, not find evidence for 'crimes' they want to prosecute."

"The FBI was created for a noble purpose. It was designed to conduct investigations for crimes that crossed state borders and to protect our homeland. Today, it is frequently being directed against the political opponents of the ruling class."

The Truth About the Island of Misfit Toys

It is the Christmas season which means soon holiday classics will be on TV constantly. I need to get off my chest the truth about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys. The thing about the misfit toys wasn't that they were squirt-guns that shot jelly or cowboys who rode ostrich's. The really strange thing about these "toys" was the fact THEY WERE ALIVE!

Now any high school biology student can tell you that life comes from life. These misfit toys were probably the offspring of some sick minded magic elves who must have gotten too "friendly" with some of the toys they were working on and fondling day after day. They were put on the Island of Misfit Toys probably as an attempt by upper management of Santa's Workshop to cover up some of the sick shit that was going on when the lights got turned off at night.

Let's be clear here - we aren't talking about misfit toys either - we are talking about FREAKS! If my kids got a choo-choo with square wheels that was alive - I would freaking BURN IT WITH FIRE! I would also then have to start spending thousands of dollars on therapy probably for the whole family. You could bet that Christmas and Santa would take on whole new meanings (and nightmares) from that day forward.

God help the children who ended up getting those freak misfit toys on Christmas morning.

And don't even get me going on the heroin backstory to The Little Drummer Boy.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Something naysayers keep doing regarding Bill Belichick being selected to be the coach at UNC is to say programs like Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State already have these pro-like amenities and requirements in place. Do these people even hear themselves because suddenly the mere presence of Belichick is elevating lowly North Carolina to the same levels as these blue bloods in their minds. That's a reason to justify the hire - not knock it.

Magnum PI

Magnum PI first appeared on TV on this day in 1980. I watched the first show and was hooked. I watched the first couple seasons religiously.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Not to be lost in all the Belichick to UNC news was the announcement that Randy Moss is fighting liver cancer and is stepping away form his NFL Sunday job at ESPN. I hope this was caught in early stages and has not spread. Guessing Moss's good health and being a former pro athlete may play a part. Liver cancer is no joke and I wish him nothing but the best.

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Maybe all this talk about Bill Belichick potentially being the next football coach at North Carolina is just an elaborate ploy to sell tickets to the upcoming Fenway Bowl which features the Tar Heels playing UConn? Bowl organizers know Belichick is big in New England.

Bill Belichick may actually take the North Carolina job and if he does it wouldn't be a surprise if he brings in his son Steve in as his defensive coordinator and heir apparent. Get the popcorn ready to see if this happens.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The final college football seeding for a 12-team playoff field was released yesterday and while most oxygen is being spent on 3-loss Alabama or Ole Miss not getting in I think the bigger controversy was that Notre Dame almost went undefeated and being ranked 2nd in the polls. The Fighting Irish finished 11-1 because they unexpectedly lost to unranked NIU. They easily could have been undefeated but still denied having a first round bye. The committee dodged a bullet on that one.
