Player Comparison

This comparison came to mind when I wondered perhaps fans have biases for or against these players.

Player A: 68.5 Comp %, 7.4 Y/A, 142 TD, 46 Int

Player B: 67.1 Comp %, 7.5 Y/A, 229 TD, 85 Int

If you haven't figured it out - Play A is Joe Burrough and Player B is Dak Prescott. The numbers are fairly equal when you consider Dak is 4-years older than Joe (which explains the more TD's but their TD to Int ration is fairly close). 

Leads you to wonder if the difference in perception stems from one being the first pick in the draft while the other waited until the 4th round. Difference in expectations? Or could it be a white vs black prejudice? You determine but there is a bias.

If it's true that Al Franken is waiting until after the new year to announce his promised resignation from the Senate just so he'll get paid for 2018 then he's really a huge asshole... So did Joe from the Jimmy Hendrix song Hey Joe ever go to jail for shooting his woman down? Or did he actually make it to Mexico?... This road trip may be the top thing on my bucket list... The Patriots are the first team in NFL history to win 12 or more games in 8-straight seasons. And fans in New England are completely taking that for granted at this point. But the fans aren't the only ones spoiled by success - Bill Belichick can't even make the list of candidates for NFL Coach of the Year with just a routine 12 or 13 win season. Greatness shouldn't be taken for granted like this... Heh heh - welcome to New England... Cowboys' coach Jason Garrett seems like the type of person who would get all excited about winning $1 on a $2 scratch ticket... Ned Flanders Erotica would be a good name for a band (or my first NYT bestselling novel)...

Last night the Cowboys basically quit when they found themselves down 21 with about 3 minutes to go. I found myself thinking that Bill Belichick and Tom Brady would never quit in those circumstances. Maybe that's why the Patriots are the Patriots and the Cowboys are the Cowboys... If humans mated like animals in comic format - disturbing... "Ditka" should be a verb or adjective for anything awesome. We should work to make "Ditka" next year's Websters Word of the Year... Cool - the outcome of the Ravens / Vikings game in terms of poker percentages. Excellent illustration of how unlikely Baltimore's victory really was... I'm wondering why we haven't seen any Ewing Theory references from Bill Simmons regarding the Patriots losing Rob Gronkowski... I'm a huge Band of Brothers fan but I didn't know about number 1 and 3 on this list (and forgot about number 2). 11 actors you may have forgotten were in Band of Brothers... Congrats to Doherty High football coach Sean Mulchahy who will be honored by the New England Patriots today as the high school coach of the year. A well deserved honor for a great guy... Great photo from Sunday!...

Weird stat - Tony Romo is 21-3 as a starting QB in the month of November. Too bad playoffs are not played before Thanksgiving... I see wild turkeys all the time. I had no idea that they were re-introduced to Massachusetts after I was born... Notre Dame haters will point out that Brian Kelley is lucky he inherited Charlie Weiss' decided schematic advantage on defense... Speaking of the big Notre Dame / USC game - has any other team started as a pre-season number 1 in the polls only to finished unranked? USC looks like they are about to accomplish this dubious feat... Would Reach-Around Elmo be a good fantasy football or band name?... Who knew? There are 293 different ways to make change for a dollar... Fact that really makes you think. Every human originally spent about half an hour as a single cell. If you murder that single cell - do you murder the human?...

Wrap your mind around this - 95 percent of the US taxes we have now did not exist 100 years ago. I'd be willing to bet that many of the taxes were enacted for a specific purpose that no longer applies but the taxes still do... I'll admit that my first thought upon hearing that Dez Bryant was hurt at Cowboys training camp was, "I hope no veterans helped Bryant off the field." That's not what they are there for... First they took away Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Now they are taking away my favorite childhood dinosaur? The dinosaur we call "triceratops" never existed... I have perfect confidence that Tom Brady and the Patriots will work out their contract issues. Perfect confidence... In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue (and the Jews were expelled from Spain). It's funny the history you are not taught in school... Happy 45th birthday to JK Rowling. Your Harry Potter books have brought me and my family hours and hours of reading pleasure... With Al Gore (sexual assault) and John Kerry (tax evasion on a multi-million dollar yacht) both being in the news lately - aren't you glad that both failed to beat George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004?

Miscellaneous NFL thoughts and observations.

Kudos to Adam Schefter of ESPN who said that Oakland was a team to watch for an upset this weekend during an appearance on WEEI radio last week... If the Patriots finish with the second best record in the AFC - then I think they and not Indianapolis will be the team to beat in the AFC and the team to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl... If Arizona found a way to score just one more point (actually all I needed was just 1/2 a point) - I would have had a much better weekend... Pittsburgh out-gained the Chiefs 515 yards to 282 but lost. This game was the poster child for the point coaches always make about the importance of turnovers (the 2 INT's by Pitt negated the huge lead in yardage they were accumulating) and special teams (completely different game without KC's game opening kickoff return for a TD)... Indianapolis' last 4 games have been won by a combined total of just 10 points. To accomplish that a lot of luck has to be in place. Sure luck favors the prepared mind and nobody seems more prepared than Peyton Manning but you have to wonder how long Indy's luck will hold up... File this under it's not over till it's over - Green Bay looked in complete control yesterday. They had a 23-3 halftime lead and everyone who bet on them was breathing pretty easy. The final score, however, was 30-24 but the line was Green Bay -6.5. Bonus for 49er fans... Do you think anyone playing fantasy football started either Brady Quinn or Matthew Stafford yesterday? Who knew?... The Cowboys have the weakest 7-3 record in football. This team won't make the playoffs. They still have to play San Diego and Philly plus games at New York and New Orleans. Not gonna make the playoffs... Justin Forsett led the Seahawks in rushing yesterday with 9 yards on 9 carries. You read that right - 9 measly yards... Carson Palmer has a career QB rating of just 88.7 to go along with 121 TD's and 75 INT's. He's not a great QB. He just isn't. In general I'm not sure what's more over-rated - USC QB's or Big 10 running backs?... Speaking of "not a great QB" - Jay Cutler is now aspiring to be as good as Jeff George...

The Adventures of Jerry Jones and Roosevelt Riley

I saw this article about Tony Romo collapsing after yesterday's choke job against Philadelphia. What struck me was the fact that Jerry Jones has a personal bodyguard called Roosevelt Riley. That just hit me as funny.

I Googled Roosevelt Riley and found out that he used to play hoop for among other teams the Harlem Globetrotters and that he stands just 5'8". This really struck me as funny.

I couldn't help but think of Jerry Jones and Roosevelt Riley jetting around the world getting into adventures as they scout for players and cheerleaders. Make it into a show - like Johnny Quest. Jerry Jones would be the Dr. Benton Quest role and Roosevelt Riley would play the Race Bannon role. Instead of the two kids - they would travel with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. They could solve crimes, fight killer robot monkeys and raise awareness of important global issues. The show could be huge

Packers vs Cowboys and One of the Biggest Political Issues of the 2008 Election

Tonight the Packers will play the Cowboys in one of the biggest games of the year in the NFL but it won't have close to the TV audience you would expect for a game of this magnitude. That is because the game will be on the NFL Network and not many cable operating companies offer the NFL Network to their customer bases. The dispute between the cable companies and the NFL basically comes down to the NFL wanting their network to be part of the basic cable package while the cable companies insisting that the NFL Network be a "pay" channel or part of a premium sports package.

I want to watch this game tonight but I cannot because my cable company does not offer the NFL Network. I am not alone. I want to watch this game and would love to have the NFL Network as a choice among my cable channels. I am not alone. I have four shopping channels, three Spanish language channels, and dozens of other channels that I do not want but am forced to subsidize as part of my basic cable TV package. I am not alone. I am not happy about this situation and once again I am not alone.

In fact I bet if you asked anyone whether they would prefer to pay only for the cable TV channels they want to watch and not be forced to subsidize packages of channels that could not survive on their own - better than 90% of people would opt for the "ala carte" version of picking individual channels. That better than 90% would be across political party lines - both Democrats, Republicans and Independents. This is an issue that everyone could agree on but politicians are not jumping on because (I guess) they do not want to alienate the cable TV special interest groups (and the money they donate to campaigns).

If you can order a movie on demand and have VCR-type controls (pause, rewind, fast forward) while watching that movie - then your cable company has the technology already in place to offer ala carte cable choice. To me this is such a no-brainer political issue that I am amazed that no major candidate has taken up the banner to lead the charge for cable choice. It would be an immensely popular position.
