Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. But I am not a government official." - Deadwood

"A lot of problems are solved by waking up early and working out." - Sahil Bloom

"90% of individual investing is just 'spend less than you make, diversify, be patient.' The other 10% is trying to speed that up often to your detriment." - Morgan Housel

"Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent, and original manner possible." - Richard Feynman

Script of Deadwood's Pilot Episode

Here's the script to the pilot episode of the show Deadwood.

Was reading David Milch's autobiography last night and when he got to the part on how the show Deadwood came about, I felt the desire to read the script to the pilot episode. And this morning I felt the need to share it.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

What would your "self" from 5-years ago think about where you are in your life today? Not your "self" when you were a child or your self from high school because those expectations were probably unrealistic - but your "self" from 2014. Would that "self" be pleased or tell the you of today that you need to improve in certain areas or accomplish certain things?... Deadwood: the Movie debuted last night on HBO. I'm waiting till I have time to properly enjoy it. Probably Sunday night. In the meantime here's an interview of W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority) by Alan Sepinwall... "The shelf life for inspiration is incredibly short. If you do not act on it when it sparks, consider it lost. If you can help it, don't interrupt inspiration. Act on it!" - Naval Ravikant... Have you ever laughed and cringed at the same time?... "What would Jesus do?" is a good tenet to live your life by but not at a wake. The family gets upset when you try to raise the dead. Trust me on this... GO BRUINS!!!

Deadwood (the Movie)

Alan Sepinwall has a must read article on the upcoming Deadwood HBO movie for any self-respecting Deadwood fan.

The movie is made all the more poignant by the fact that show creator David Milch is suffering from Alzheimer's.

The movie debuts on HBO at the end of May and I can't wait!

In anticipation for the new Deadwood movie - I've started re-watching the series (again).

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I wonder if any of the Las Vegas sportsbooks will have a prop bet on whether Julian Edelman throws a pass in the Super Bowl? I'd throw a few dollars on "Yes" - just a hunch...  "Sin" originally meant "to miss the mark". Ask yourself what are you aiming for with your life? What is the mark you wish to hit? Maybe the real "sin" in the modern sense is aiming too low with your life... Someone should make a video of the accomplishments of the first 2-years of the Trump Administration with photos of President Trump set to the music of Carmina Burana. You would definitely get people watching two separate movies as Scott Adams likes to say... A "quantum leap" in general vernacular is used to denote a huge jump forward but shouldn't it be used to denote a tiny change instead? The quantum world itself is beyond microscopic... I'm a little surprised that Ed O'Neill is not in the cast of the new Deadwood movie. O'Neill was the original choice to play Swearengen and David Milch loved working with him on John from Cincinnati. Maybe O'Neill was unavailable?...  Cool - the library from Castlevania does exist. I've never seen Castlevania but I do love me some libraries... My name is Chris and I drink way too much during football season. Hi Chris!...

Deadwood

The Deadwood movie is real and might be coming sooner than people think. Hard to believe its been 16-years since the last episode.

Interesting interview with one of the producers of the movie.

Even for hardcore fans - some facts you might not know about Deadwood.

Ricky Jay

The great Ricky Jay has passed away.

No offense to Penn & Teller but Ricky Jay was my favorite magician. If you watch the documentary about him Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay you'll understand why.

Besides Penn & Teller did not have a recurring role on one of my favorite shows like Ricky Jay did on Deadwood as Eddie Sawyer.

RIP Ricky.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- NASA's InSight Mars mission to test what's under the surface of the Red Planet

- Supreme Court declines to take on Net Neutrality challenges. And I'm honestly confused on how to feel about this.

- Wow - I want to try this to see if it works (but I'm not sure if I own a sewing needle and thread)

- New discovery sheds light on mystery of pyramids construction

-  Supplementation with spermidine could improve memory of adults at risk for Alzheimer's. But if Pharma companies want adult males to swallow this they are definitely going to have to come up with a better name.

- Deadwood movie is in production! And the gang's all back! But I do wonder what the plot will do with Gerald McRaney's character (have an idea but will keep it to myself).

- And speaking of Alzheimer's - AI detects Alzheimer's six years earlier

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Why socialism sucks in one graph... A reminder of the wisdom of the masses - a 1967 Gallup poll found twice as many Americans supported nuking North Vietnam as opposed to withdrawing... Heh heh... If an apple was magnified to the size of the Earth - then the atoms of the apple would equal the original size of the apple... Speaking of 1967 - yesterday was Carl Yastrzemski's 79th birthday. Here's a great Yaz story. My how times have changed...  Quotes that make you think: "You are 99 years old, you are on your deathbed, and you have a chance to come back to right now: what do you do?" Christopher Carmichael... This makes me pretty excited for the Deadwood movie...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Saying that the Hubble telescope has a new rival is incorrect. I would prefer them to say that Earth based telescope technology has taken the next step forward... Wrap your mind around this - 95% of the taxes we have today in the US did not exist 100-years ago. How many of those taxes were enacted for a specific purpose that may no longer exist but the taxes still do?... This remains one of my favorite paintings and yes I am going to hell... Prohibited means not allowed but you never hear anyone say that things that are allowed are "hibited". Not sure if "hibited" is even a word. I'll be very gruntled if it is... 12-mile wide "lake" found on Mars. Very cool and could serve as a future base of operations of  a manned base on the planet but I can help but keep thinking of the Doctor Who episode The Waters of Mars...  "What can be added to the happiness of the man who is in health, who is out of debt, and has a clear conscience." Sage words of wisdom from Adam Smith... About time! Deadwood movie finally greenlit by HBO...

Deadwood

The rumors are out there for a new Deadwood movie. Count me as unimpressed. Not only do I not think the logistics will work out to align all the stars for a movie - I'm not sure even as a big Deadwood fan that I want it to happen.

Can you think of any series or movie that was resurrected after 10 or so years that was satisfying or successful? The whole thing makes me think it would be a flop somewhere between Rescue from Gilligan's Island to Godfather III.  Sure there have been a few science fiction franchises like Star Wars, Aliens and Terminator that have been able to take breaks from the storyline but Deadwood is based upon historical characters. Do you want to see Seth Bullock talk about alfalfa farming? Me neither. Although I do admit a Teddy Roosevelt story line would be interesting but how would that involve Al Swearengen?

I think I'm just going to enjoy my re-runs on HBO Go.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not sure how I would feel about a possible Deadwood movie. Loved the show but it will more than 10-years passed if a movie does come out... I think the Jets are much better off with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. I also think Geno Smith will never start another game for the Jets... 18 Game of Thrones moments improved by Monty Python and the Holy Grail quotes... Growing up Catholic if a priest kept a mass under an hour he was a "good" priest. If he was consistently at 45 minutes - that priest developed a cult following... The idea of bringing back original Johnny Carson Tonight Show episodes in their full length is genius. So glad the hurdles were cleared to make this happen... All of you NFL fans who call the Patriots cheaters - time to move out of your glass house... You have to wonder how the Red Sox would have done this season if they had both Jon Lester and John Lackey in the rotation... Unbelievable - letter to the editor predicted EPA spill a week before it happened...  A Red Sox outfield with Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo would be the best defensive OF in MLB - time to move Hanley Ramirez to first base... When Tom Brady sues the NFL for defamation and the damage done to his reputation I hope this post is listed among the exhibits... Just saying but Hanley Ramirez can't be any worse defensively at first than Kevin Millar was... Heh heh...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

According to Darren Rovell - a Las Vegas bettor last night risked $400 on a 40-1 bet that a no-hitter would be thrown last night. Thanks to Homer Bailey - that betting slip is now worth $16,000... A map of the US based upon the beer that best represents the state... I wonder what gets better ratings - WNBA games on ESPN or anything on MSNBC. Either way - I'm guessing re-runs of Sponge Bob beats them both... Ernest Hemingway explains his love of alcohol... I feel lost not knowing what Jose Canseco thinks about the protests in Egypt... Alan Sepinwall called this the best fight scene ever on TV. I've been thinking and I can't come up with a better one... If Brett Favre develops testicular cancer - will he sue his cell phone company because of the radiation from his selfies?... Fantastic long read about Jason Everman who was kicked out of Nirvana and Soundgarden before finding his calling in the Special Forces... It's amazing but if Mark Sanchez were to retire today - the thing he'd most be remembered for is the "butt fumble". Not exactly what you want from your "franchise quarterback"... Serious question - can the Obama Administration point to a single foreign policy success?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I don't think it will come to this but excellent point - if Tim Tebow doesn't get any any NFL QB opportunities he could spark a bidding war for his college football TV services... "Wouldn't the world be a cleaner place if we gave blind people brooms instead of canes?" - Nick Thune... Why do people say "I shit myself" or "I almost shit myself"? Who else are you going to shit?... Speaking of shit - you know you've wondered about this - why does your crap sometimes float and sometimes sink?...  Old Irish saying, "Many a time a man's mouth has broken his nose"... Wow I feel old - Bree Seanna Wall who played little Sophia on Deadwood is now 18-years old... I don't like the phrase "immoral fornicator". Have you ever heard anyone who would say that also say "moral fornicator"?... Chick-fil-A should sign Jason Collins as an endorser. Certain people's heads would explode... I am really surprised that this doesn't happen more in baseball... Is it really necessary at this point for people who advertise lunch or dinner buffets to add the words "all you can eat"?...
