Spring Training Home Runs
Going into Saturday's action three players lead MLB in home runs this spring with 3 apiece.
Chris Shelton has 3 HR for the Mariners but is a long shot to make the Opening Day roster. Shelton was signed to a minor league deal and if he makes the roster it will probably be at the expense of Worcester's Bryan LaHair - so I'm rooting for Shelton to catch on elsewhere. Someone should take a shot with Shelton - he could be this year's Carlos Pena. Maybe a more apt comparison would be Brian Daubach.
Also with 3 HR is Jason Lane of Toronto who was also signed to a minor league deal in the off-season. Like Shelton - Lane is a long shot to make the opening day roster.
The third player with 3 HR is Mitch Jones of the Dodgers. Jones is a career minor-leaguer who at 31-years old is probably experiencing the apex of his baseball career this spring. MLB.com doesn't even have a page for Mitch Jones).
I guess the overall point is that spring training home runs really don't mean squat.
