Jim Calhoun and UConn
First congratulations to coach Calhoun and the Huskies. Two national championships in six years - that's something to be very proud of. Let's be honest though - last night's game wasn't exactly an ESPN Instant Classic. In fact it was kinda boring. The game was decided by halftime as St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli's prediction of UConn wire to wire came true.
I ended up switching between the game and baseball on ESPN and later The West Wing on Bravo. I also started to wonder if all of this success for UConn might have been very different if John Calipari had stayed at UMass instead of taking the boat loads of NBA cash from the New Jersey Nets. Calipari was a very good recruiter and having another major proram right up the street from UConn may have put a dent in UConn's recruiting ability (remember that Marcus Camby was a Connecticut guy but he went to UMass). If Calipari stays at UMass - maybe UConn doesn't get the national championships. (Note: I went to UMass so this is probably "what if" sour grapes on my part)
