Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Glenn Greenwald: The NSA's Inspector General Opens Investigation Into Allegations of Illegal Spying on Tucker Carlson

- UN "We have 10-Years to Stop the Catastrophe" (1972)

- Interesting $100,000 contest - a censorship-resistant Inflation Dashboard that doesn't rely on government data. Those two components - being censorship-resistant and not relying on government data are so key (sadly just as much for US data as for China's).

 - What's Behind the Conservative Rift on the Supreme Court. "As Republicans have learned, nominating a justice with a conservative track record is no guarantee of what kind of justice he or she will be if they don't take into account the institutional axis." Excellent way of looking at things.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

What came first - the Elf on a Shelf phenomenon or the NSA spying on all your data? The two seem to be related. Maybe the NSA invented Elf on a Shelf in order to get younger generations used to the idea of being spied on all the time... Still makes me chuckle... The phrase "get bent" is supposedly short for "you should get bent over so that someone can sodomize you on Christmas." Oh those wacky Brits and their holiday spirit!... File under "Fake but Accurate"... I seriously would like to see Disney do a re-make of Team America: World Police just to see what their version would look like...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It could be argued that anti-Semitism is so rampant in the Democratic Party that if a Democratic Presidential candidate today called New York City "Hymie Town" that candidate would actually go up in the Democratic polls... If you watch the movie To Kill a Mockingbird backwards it is the story of a black man brought back from the dead to break up some furniture... Getting this off my chest - when it was announced Tom Cruise would play fictional character Jack Reacher there was an outcry because in the books Reacher was 6'5" while Cruise is just 5'7". Yet I don't think anyone blinked an eye at 5'10" Robert DeNiro playing real life 6'4" Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran... NSA Employee of the Month... The offseason announcement that all true Red Sox fans are waiting to hear is "Today we placed Wally the Green Monster on irrevocable waivers"... Just saying but if this point if either Oprah or the Rock decided to run for President as a Democrat then the nomination would be all but theirs for the asking - you know that's true... Love this JRR Tolkien story...

Christmas Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous Christmas related thoughts and observations.

What came first - the Elf on a Shelf phenomenon or the NSA spying on all your data? The two seem to be related. Maybe the NSA invented Elf on a Shelf in order to get all new generations used to being watched all the time... As we enter the Christmas season a gentle reminder - if you play The Christmas Shoes on the jukebox I should be allowed to throw darts at you. No exceptions!.. Confession: I have never seen the movie A Christmas Story. No plans to see it this year either... Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Pud Galvin was born on Christmas Day 1856. He was nicknamed Pud because he made hitters look like "pudding" at the plate. Not because he was a dick... If I worked at a radio station that played Christmas music 24/7 - I would play the soundtrack to Die Hard over and over. Then quit!... The phrase "get bent" is supposedly short for "you should get bent over so that someone can sodomize you on Christmas." Oh those Brits! And a Merry Christmas to you too!...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Look I think Al Franken is a giant jerk but I hope he doesn't go full Slobodan Praljak at today's press conference... Violence Cake would be a good name for a band... This is nuts. Not sure if this shows how great Tom Brady has been or how pathetic the Bills are... So Jimbo Fisher says he didn't throw out his Christmas tree prior to leaving FSU. He said the guy who set up his tree threw it out because it was broken. What kind of man has another guy set up his family Christmas tree? I now dislike Jimbo Fisher... Heh heh... If you are on the opposite side of a moral argument from Mitt Romney - there's a 99% chance you're on the wrong side... What came first? The Elf on the Shelf phenomenon or the NSA spying on all of your data? Seem related. Maybe the NSA invented the Elf on a Shelf in order to get all new generations used to being watched all the time... Not a Trump fan but I would love it if he submitted Elizabeth Warren's name in to be the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Most of the attention has been on Gawker and their abomidible actions but this story from the UK has much more potential privacy related impact. Can you imagine if the NSA started to be used for political purposes the way the IRS has been corrupted?... Heh heh - so true!... Catholic nuns have to take vows of poverty while priests do not. Tell me again why we should be listening to the Pope on issues of income inequality?... Yes and I want to know that story... If I owned a pharmaceutical company I'd hire Alex Rodriguez to do genital herpes commercials just so I could hear A-Rod say, "I'm Alex rodriguez and I have genital herpes"... 10-years ago the Yankees rotation was Small, Wang, Brown, Johnson (insert your own gay Asian porno joke here)...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Rand Paul summarizes Barack Obama's NSA policies

- Projecting a Jon Lester contract extension. As an informed Red Sox fan I would be happy with a 4-year contract with a 5th year option at $20 million per year.

- Charlie Pierce is also not happy with Obama's NSA policies

- 5 epic drinking stories

- Jimmy Kimmel's take on Obamacare. As Homer would say, "It's funny because it's true".

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I wonder if Barack Obama publicly supporting the Blackhawks will hurt Ed Markey in his bid for the Mass Senate seat among Bruins fans. I hope it does... Lost in the Tim Tebow hoopla was the fact that the story of him signing with the Patriots was broken by Ed Werder. Does that mean Werder is Belichick's "go to" reporter?... Speaking of Tebow - the Angels wanted to draft him... Obama to announce that he is changing the name of PRISM to SkyNet. What could go wrong?... Cool photo of a lightning strike in Chicago last night... I wonder how many Michael Angelo's there are in the phone book. Are phone books even a thing any more?... 36 made in Massachusetts summer beers... The more I do my own laundry - the more I find myself not wearing underwear...  Interesting read on "Incarcerated Bob". Bottom line - you are a fool if you pay for picks... The only silver lining about the NSA monitoring all calls story is the ability for parents to warn their children not to send nude pics because the government will put them on the Internet. Maybe that will do the trick. Sad reflection on our liberty but we've gone from telling children to be good because Santa is watching to adults thinking "holy crap - there really is someone watching to see if I'm naughty or nice"... Interesting stuff - 22 things you may not know about the Stanley Cup...
