Top Gun: Maverick

Went to see Top Gun: Maverick last night and I liked it - mostly because it was what it was supposed to be - two hours of mindless entertainment. No woke messaging which seem to be in every movie these days. Just Tom Cruise being a different sort of super hero and fighter jet thief.

There were some points where your suspension of disbelief is stretched to the max and the plot was predictable but the movie was fun. And that's what movies are supposed to be - fun.

One observation - because many in the audience were fans of the original movie it was an older audience. An audience where many had to get up to go to the bathroom about an hour and a half in. Seriously have never seen so many at a movie urgently need to go to the bathroom.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Is it just me or does it seem like some of the early Tom Cruise movies like Risky Business and All the Right Moves have just disappeared into the ether? You hardly ever hear about those movies anymore or see them on TV or on any of the streaming services. Strange... MLB to end 70-year relationship with Topps. Tradition means nothing anymore to those who run the game. Citizens should ban together for a class-action suit to prevent MLB from ever referring to itself as "America's Pastime" ever again... Some Ancient Indian wisdom says your should never eat your next meal until you feel hunger pangs. The feeling of hunger is your body's signal to you that the previous meal has been digested and that your body is ready for you to eat again. Simple wisdom but so wise... My idea of multi-tasking is reading in the morning while drinking hot coffee or reading at night while drinking a cold beer... In light of what's happening in Afghanistan - I have the urge to re-read David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest for perspective (though I highly doubt anyone in the Biden Administration could be called either "the best" or "the brightest" with a straight face)...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It could be argued that anti-Semitism is so rampant in the Democratic Party that if a Democratic Presidential candidate today called New York City "Hymie Town" that candidate would actually go up in the Democratic polls... If you watch the movie To Kill a Mockingbird backwards it is the story of a black man brought back from the dead to break up some furniture... Getting this off my chest - when it was announced Tom Cruise would play fictional character Jack Reacher there was an outcry because in the books Reacher was 6'5" while Cruise is just 5'7". Yet I don't think anyone blinked an eye at 5'10" Robert DeNiro playing real life 6'4" Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran... NSA Employee of the Month... The offseason announcement that all true Red Sox fans are waiting to hear is "Today we placed Wally the Green Monster on irrevocable waivers"... Just saying but if this point if either Oprah or the Rock decided to run for President as a Democrat then the nomination would be all but theirs for the asking - you know that's true... Love this JRR Tolkien story...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- "Too short" Tom Cruise to be replaced in Jack Reacher reboot. Jack Reacher is 6'5" and a beast in the books but I think if Cruise agreed to do a third film Lee Child would cash that check in a heartbeat.

- Giant meteorite creator bigger than Paris found under Greenland's ice sheet. Randall Carlson proven correct!

- Kevin Durant to the Celtics? Actually I believe I had that "hot take" first.

- Cool - how to make 40 different paper airplanes

- Heh Heh

- Iowa Nation Guard soldiers told to return overpaid wages. The soldiers did nothing wrong and if I were a billionaire I would just write a check to cover all of these funds. Isn't there some billionaire from Iowa willing to step up?

- This is the best college prank of all-time

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

GMC should have a special edition Denali that would only be available in Ohio but which would be called the McKinley....Who knew?... Maybe the NFL is going so hard after the Patriots this off-season because the Colts want people to forget about their stupid 9-point play proposal... Not kidding - I really want that Roger Goodell T-shirt... Heh heh - well this explains a lot; "A bow tie announces to the world that you can no longer get an erection" - David Sedaris... To help avoid intentional tanking - the NBA should force the team that finishes with the worst record to wear white yoga pants as part of their home uniform the following year. Problem solved... Holy crap - the new Tesla Model S is so good it broke Consumer Reports rating system... Metabolic Cascades of Dysfunction would be a good name for a fantasy football team. It is also a fancy way of saying "concussions"...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Today is National Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day - this flavor name is creative but if its literal then I'd say its disgusting... It still blows my mind that Ronald Reagan was the original choice to play Rick Blaine in the classic Casablanca... Ray Allen already has a championship ring. He's a smart guy - he's not going to Miami to be Dwayne Wade's back-up for half the money he could make from the Celtics...  Candidates for Congress should have to take and pass the test immigrants have to take to become Citizens. Candidates should have to pass this test before their name ever gets on a ballot... A surgeon cuts to the heart of why Obamacare is awful for healthcare in this country... In 1892 Benjamin Harrison became the first US President to attend a baseball game. Jack McKeon managed one of the teams... They say it takes 10,000 hours of doing something to become an expert. If that's the case then I'm an expert on watching the Boston Red Sox... Next season on Game of Thrones a great wizard and conjurer is introduced. Some call him Tim... There must be some higher purpose to the Tom / Katy divorce. Cthulhu doesn't play dice with the universe...  The Red Sox are now 0-5 in extra innings games this season. That's because the other teams have had better managers... Punch him again Pudge!!!

My Problem with the Movie The Firm

I saw this video clip this morning. I couldn't agree with the plot hole in Back to the Future more and I'm somewhat bothered that I didn't think of it myself.

That bit of comedy prodded me to write about something thats been bothering me lately - the obvious plot holes in the movie The Firm. I'm not talking about the suspension of belief required to see Tom Cruise as a genius lawyer either. I'm OK with that. What I'm not OK with is the fact that the FBI is concerned with money-laundering but couldn't give a damn about murder.

The two lawyers are killed in the Cayman Islands along with the son of the guy who runs the dive shop and nobody cares? "The Nordic Man" (that's what the albino-like killer is called in the credits) is positively ID'd by Barry Abanks (Sullivan Walker). Does the father want justice for his son's murder? No - he wants to help Mitch McDeere nail The Firm for white collar crime instead! Tammy Hemphill (Holly Hunter) sees her boss killed by "the Nordic man" and "the squat man" (that's how Dean Norris is listed in the credits). Does she want justice for the murder of her lover Eddie Lomax (Gary Busey)? No she wants to do secretarial work for Mitch McDeere instead.

Barry Abanks can positively ID the firm's hired killers; Tammy Hemphill was an eye-witness to the murder of Eddie Lomax and Mitch McDeere can testify that the murderers were in the employ of the firm's head of security, William Devasher (Wilford Brimley - who surprisingly is still alive - must be all that oatmeal). That's murder and conspiracy but what the heck - let's go with over-billing instead. Did they not have MURDER on the bar exam Mitch?

This bothers me. Just thought I'd share.
