The Angels have suspended Jose Guillen for the remainder of the year - including playoffs (if the Angels make it).
"We had to do something with Jose," he [Scioscia] said. "This is about the organization, not one guy. Bill wanted to be loud and clear with the message. It was an issue getting in the way of winning."Headcase, selfish and cancer along with talented are the best words to describe Guillen. The Angels won the World Series by being a team of selfless players who did the little things to insure victory. Guillen is the antithesis of that.
It must be said that maybe this action isn't so cut and dried if Guillen wasn't so bad in September (just a .606 OPS). Guillen was maybe the MVP of the team in the first half (.301 / 15 HR / 65 RBI) but at his current level of production - he was quite simply a pain in the ass. The Angels are just one game out of first place and right now they can't afford to either babysit a headcase or tolerate distractions from a non-producing egomaniac.
Guillen is owed $3 million for 2005. It will be interesting to see what happens next (my guess is that he's all done in Anaheim).
