Retiring Sluggers

Edgar Martinez announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season. Immediately people have begun discussing whether Edgar is worthy of Hall of Fame induction. While I like Edgar as a person just as much as anyone - I think it may be helpful to compare his numbers to some other sluggers who will probably be retiring this year to gain some perspective.

I would think it would be safe to assume that along with Edgar - Fred McGriff, Juan Gonzalez, Ellis Burks, and Andres Galarraga will also be retiring at the end of this year. How do these players compare (keeping in mind that Edgar will probably add to his totals by the end of the year)? Let's take a peak:

Games:
1. McGriff - 2460
2. Galarraga - 2250
3. Martinez - 2013

Hits:
1. McGriff - 2490
2. Galarraga - 2330
3. Martinez - 2205

Runs:
1. McGriff - 1349
2. Burks - 1252
3. Martinez - 1203

Home Runs:
1. McGriff - 493
2. Gonzalez - 434
3. Galarraga - 393

RBI:
1. McGriff - 1550
2. Galarraga - 1423
3. Gonzalez - 1404

Batting Average:
1. Martinez - .312
2. Gonzalez - .295
3. Burks - .291

On Base Percentage:
1. Martinez - .420
2. McGriff - .377
3. Burks - .363

Slugging Percentage:
1. Gonzalez - .561
2. Martinez - .518
3. Burks - .510

A couple of notes:

- I didn't include Barry Larkin in the mix because as a shortstop - he's a completely different case altogether

- All the sluggers compared are righties except for McGriff

- The only category Edgar is top 20 all-time in is on base percentage and he is exactly 20th
