Youkilis vs. Boggs

Wade Boggs burst onto the Boston sports scene in 1982 at age 24. I thought it would be interesting to compare how current Red Sox rookie thirdbaseman Kevin Youkilis compares so far.

Youkilis - 153 AB/ 31 R/ 6 HR/ 28 RBI/ .281 BA/ .388 OBP/ .464 SLG

Boggs - 338 AB/ 51 R/ 5 HR/ 44 RBI/ .349 BA/ .406 OBP/ .441 SLG

A couple of things to point out:

- Even though Boggs has a lead in BA - Youkilis actually has the better OPS (.852 to .847)
- Boggs was known as a patient rookie at the plate but he finished with just 35 walks while Youkilis already has 25 in less than half the at-bats
- The fact that Youkilis is 25 while Boggs was 24 when he first came into the big leagues kinda puts holes into the old myth that the Red Sox were making Boggs languish in the minor leagues
- Youkilis seems like a very likeable guy while Wade Boggs was Wade Boggs
