USS Indianapolis

Many only learned of the USS Indianapolis from Captain Quint's speech in the movie Jaws. Here's what really happened after the Indianapolis delivered the bomb at Tinian.

"...the Indianapolis, an older vessel, lacked sonar gear for submarine detection and was top heavy. Japanese submarine I-38 discovered the heavy cruiser in the Philippines Sea a little before Midnight on Sunday, July 29...

The torpedoes and following explosions of ammunition and aviation fuel ripped away the cruiser's bow and destroyed the power center. without power the radio officer was unable to send a distress signal - he went through the motions anyway - or the bridge to communicate with the engine room, The engines pushed the ship forward unchecked, scooping up water through the holes in the hull and leaving behind the sailors thrown overboard who had been sleeping on deck in the tropical heat. The order to abandon ship, when it came, had to be passed word of mouth."

About 850 sailors went into the sea facing 12 foot waves:

"Most had kapok lifejackets. Few could find their way to the life rafts. They floated instead in clusters, linked together, stronger men swimming the circumferences to catch sleepers before they drifted away, one group numbered between three and four hundred souls. They pushed the wounded to the center where the water was calmer and prayed the distress call had gone out.

The captain had found two empty life rafts and later that night encountered one more unoccupied. He ordered the rafts lashed together. They sheltered ten men and he thought them the only survivors. Through the night a current carried the swimmers southwest while winds blew the rafts northeast: by the light of morning rafts and swimmers had separated beyond discovery."

What happened next to those in the water was beyond terrorizing and I'll omit because words can't do it justice.

"Thursday morning, August 2, a Navy plane spotted the survivors. Because of negligence at Leyte the Indianapolis had not even been missed. A major rescue effort began, ships streaming to the area. PBY's and PBM's dropping food, water, and survival gear. The rescuers found 318 naked and emaciated men."

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Most every football fan knows the name Bill Belichick but if the names of the voters who snubbed his election to the Hall of Fame are ever revealed - how many of those names will you recognize? I'm guessing very few if any. They were trying to make a name for themselves by voting "No" but now as the pettiness of their actions are made plain to the world they hide behind anonymity. Greenland and the US

Wrote an article last year on Donald Trump's interest in "acquiring" Greenland and this thought jumped back out at me:

Also keep in mind that the country is rich in natural resources including many rare earth metals. The big drawback is said to be the cost to mine these resources. Would that still be true of a person like Elon Musk who owns the Boring Company and manufacturers robots? As an aside - what better way to stress test robots for the harsh environments of Mars than testing them in the harsh environments of Greenland?

This is true - isn't it? Do you think this possibility has been discussed?

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Bill Belichick not getting into the HOF on the first vote is a travesty. At least 11 of the 50 voters denied him entry in what had always been an anonymous vote. Why they voted "No" is speculation but it could have been jealousy, Belichick beat their favorite team, punishment for Spygate, or they just plain didn't like him. I have particular hate for anyone who voted against him because they planned to write a "why I voted against Belichick" column. Whatever the reason, these voters made a mockery of the process and don't be surprised if there's no more anonymous voting because of this. And don't be surprised if sports writers are taken out of the process completely and voting handed over to HOF members only.

President Trump has threatened Canada with 100% tariffs to go into effect immediately. I would not be surprised if after the reality of what these tariffs may do to the economy the Province of Alberta asks for relief and Trump grants it - but just for a certain term which would be long enough to either vote for independence or replace Mark Carney as PM. Thinking that was the goal all along and the 100% tariff was just a ruse (but a justified one given Carney's agreement with China).

Canada already had the very real danger of Alberta voting to become an independent nation but instead of going to Alberta to try and put out that fire Canadian PM Mark Carney went to China and lit a bigger one. Will the results of this "trade deal" with China see the province of Saskatchewan join with Alberta? With those two gone what's to keep British Columbia from declaring independence since they are now geographically cut off from the rest of Canada? Quebec has long wanted to be independent. Our attention spans are short here - just look at the Brown University shooter fading from public consciousness. Or remember pledging you stand with Hong Kong? When's the last time you thought of either? Hard not to think of how fleeting such things can be when someone like Scott Adams is facing more eternal questions.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The Patriots laid the defensive smack down on the Chargers last nigh 16-3. This was the the first New England playoff win since they won the Super Bowl in 2019. Meanwhile you may start to see some "Are we actually sure LA QB Justin Hebert is actually good?" talk. Not saying anything but if you switched QB's from the two teams - do you think you get the same result last night?

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

What does the phrase "red blooded American" even mean? Don't all Americans have red blood? If you cut them do they not bleed (red blood). Well this red blooded American stayed up to watch the Bears pull of a victory over Green Bay and had a full 8 hours of the sleep of the just as I thought of freedom in Iran and Venezuela.

College Football Thoughts

More college football thoughts and observations as the championship matchup between Indiana and Miami is set.

Was having these thoughts anyway and figure may as well jot them down and post on Substack.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Minnesota as a systems failure: How NGO's process dissent until reality no longer matters (but the tax dollars do).

- Sadly true!

- Is NY fraud 10x worse than Minnesota's? We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg aren't we?

- Anthony Bourdain's favorite sandwich. I'll have to give this a try.

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Indiana trucked Oregon 56-22 last night to set up a national championship matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. The Hoosiers really looked unstoppable last night. Indiana has been installed as a 7.5 point favorite in that game and really gave off the vibe as a team of destiny. Will have all my college football thoughts later on.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Health gains vanish withing 2 years of stopping weight loss drugs. Taking things like Ozempic regularly are habits and most benefits from most habits fade if you stop doing them. Exercise also doesn't cost you anything and doesn't need to be approved by insurance. (HT Cultural Offering)

- Demond Williams Jr.'s case will test viability of signed contracts. Fact that Williams agent dropped him as a client may point that entering transfer portal wasn't his idea.

- What's the price? I can see paying a little more for something but not 10,000% more.

- Fire Departments' new emergency: Affording their trucks.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Thrilling game last night as Miami edged Ole Miss 31-27 in a game that seemed like the last team to have the ball would win. Ole Miss had the ball last but ran out of time. Many may point to the Hurricanes win as more evidence of SEC weakness but the Rebels have nothing to be ashamed of. They were a true underdog and many found themselves rooting for them.
