Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The NCAA is suing DraftKings for trademark infringement over the betting site's use of trademarked terms like March Madness and Final Four. This is a well known no-no and I can't help but think of how the Trump Administration won't use the term "war" to describe what's going on in Iran since that too would be a no-no since Congress never authorized a war. Words matter.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The math of March Madness is impressive. You start with 64 teams (I refuse the count the play ins) and by the end of the first weekend its down to the Sweet 16. After next weekend we get the Final Four with a champion crowned the following Monday. The thing to remember is that this math works in reverse too. You can start with one but if you keep doubling you'd have 64 in no time. And so on. Next thing you know old Jed's a millionaire.

Lots going on in the world but much of America is focused on March Madness. But like much of the US the play-in games don't really count in most people's minds. Saint Cornelius of Ireland

Though not widely remembered today - at one point Saint Cornelius of Ireland (not to be confused with Saint Cornelius of Antioch) was second in popularity in the Emerald Isle only to Saint Patrick.

Saint Patrick is remembered for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Saint Cornelius was said to have driven the squirrels out of Ireland. This "miracle" of Saint Cornelius later proved to be his undoing. During the Great Potato Famine starving Irishmen and women wished they had tasty squirrel meat to eat and they cursed Saint Cornelius for driving out the furry rodents. In response to this outrage - Pope Pius IX removed Cornelius from the roll of official Catholic Saints.

His traditional Feast Day was celebrated April1st.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

There was a tragic shooting at Old Dominion yesterday yet the usual voices calling for gun confiscation after such events are oddly silent today. Skeptical minds might think this is because the shooter was a radicalized Islamist felon given early release by a liberal judicial system and the good guys were unarmed military cadets. That doesn't quite match the preferred narrative does it. Wonder if that's why those voices are silent today?

Home Depot - Built from Scratch

Been meaning to post about this book on the history of Home Depot written by the founders but mainly by Bernie Marcus. They wanted to build a "do it yourself" superstore with a focus on, "Whatever is better for the consumer is better for the economy."

Important to remember that Lowe's was number one in the building supply industry until Home Depot sailed past them in 1989.

File this under once you see it you can't unsee it, "...the logic of supermarkets. Lumber was our meat. When you go into a grocery store, you never see the meat up front, because you want all the people to buy all the condiments before they get to the meat."

Home Depot started their affiliation with the Olympic Games in 1992 when the games were held in their home town of Atlanta. They remain one of the largest providers to Olympic hopefuls in the world. If you watched the recent Winter Olympics - you may have noticed the connectron.

We have reached a fog of war situation between the US and Iran. You have to take any information from both sides with a grain of salt as it is being filtered from when it actually happens to when is reported to the general public. Even in a couple of weeks when much comes out we may not have the full story.

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- For the Iranian diaspora in US, hope for a Berlin Wall moment. Strange that title talks of diaspora in US but article just talks about California.

= Glenn Reynolds: Cutting off the head of the snake. "To quote author Keith Laumer, 'there's nothing as peaceful as a dead troublemaker.' Khamenei is now peaceful." He makes an excellent point about China too.

- Plugged the book Education of a Wandering Man into the Book Recommendations site and got back 30 title. Of those I've already read 15, have 3 on my reading list, 2 others on bookshelves and will probably be adding the other titles to my wish list.

- Jonathan Turley: Trump can rely on past Democratic President s for authority to attack Iran.

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

China, Russia, Pakistan, and others have protested the US military actions against Iran in Operation Epic Fury but this was what they were expected to do. No real actions other than words of condemnation will be taken. If these nations had any real issue during the US's weeks long build up of military asset literally on Iran's doorstep those concerns would have been conveyed long ago.
