College Football Sunday Thoughts
It has been strongly suggested that the delay from Kiffin's camp is that he's decided to sign with LSU but wants to coach Ole Miss in the playoffs. Kiffin is supposedly threatening that if he doesn't get his way he may poach as many players from the Rebels as possible on his way out the door. Even if this is just a rumor don't think Kiffin realizes he already had a serious relapse to his old self which was major league unlikable.
Anyway there's a lot more news to college football than just Kiffin and his ego.

The saying "past performance does not guaranty future results" seems to be applicable to the Chiefs, Ravens and Bills. Yet many (me included) seem to be giving them the benefit of the doubt because of how they played in the past. Maybe these teams just aren't that good anymore. Still not at the point of believing in the Broncos, Colts, or Patriots as being true contenders though - but maybe we've let our opinions of the other teams interfere with the facts.

"A whole glass plant could be built on the personal knowledge of a single glassmaker. And the main raw materials required - sand and wood for the furnace - were abundant on the eastern seaboard. As a result, glassmaking was probably the first industry established in British America. Polish and German glassmakers were brought to Virginia in 1608, followed by Italian glassmakers a few years later, and before the mid-seventeenth century, Massachusetts Bay was offering land to attract its own glassmakers. These craftsmen made bottles, lamps, tableware a few pieces of window glass, and incidentally provided some glass beads for the Indian trade. Amazing how famous Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became in history yet how obscure the third and forth people to walk on the Moon became to the common person. Like how nobody remembers the second person to break the 4-minute mile. Or the second person to break the sound barrier.

The new college football playoff rankings were released last night and there were very few surprises. Georgia did move up to the 4th spot and a first round bye after their beatdown of Texas. Notre Dame stayed at 9th meaning Alabama was 10th. Miami came in 11th which should please ACC and Hurricanes fans. And no I did not stay up to watch it - just saw the rankings once they were released.

Last night New England beat the Jets 27-14. It was a great win with Gronk signing his ceremonial one-day contract and all but I'll be honest - not a fan of the new Nor-easter uniforms. They look like someone bought a jersey but ran it through the washer too many times until the color faded. Stick to the blue and occasional red Pat Patriot uniforms.

Jordan Love and Mike Greenwell
The Green Bay 10-7 loss at Lambeau to the Eagles on Monday Night has brought out a lot of criticism on both Packers QB Jordan Love and coach Matt LaFleur. Think the criticism of LaFleur is mostly venting. He's been widely compared to the 49ers Kyle Shanahan and Rams coach Sean McVay (LaFleur even has a better winning percentage than those two "geniuses"). To the venters LaFleur should be on the hot seat though.
The case of Jordan Love is more complicated. He suffers from the fact that he does not appear to be a young Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre (his two predecessors with the Packers). Such expectations are unfair - but they are real.
The situation reminds me of the situation Mike Greenwell found himself in with the Red Sox. Greenwell took over LF from Hall of Famer and the most feared hitter in the AL - Jim Rice who took over patrolling the Green Monster from legend and no-doubt Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. Greenwell was an excellent hitter but just wasn't either Rice or Yaz.
Perhaps Love is suffering likewise because he's not Rodgers or Favre? Maybe that's too much to expect? Or just maybe Green Bay needs their version of Manny Ramirez.

President Trump signed the bill to reopen the government after 43 days and the longest shutdown in history. The second longest was 35 days and happened during his first term in office. Wife of Moses

Book idea: do a first person book of what it was like to be the wife of Moses. We know much about Moses but almost zip about his wife Zipporah. We know that she was the daughter of Jethro, the mother of Moses' two sons Gershom and Eliezer, and that her name means bird but other than that - a clean slate.
The book could be the same genre as Grendel by John Gardner or Layer Cake by JJ Connolly. Use the same storytelling techniques but remain historically correct. The plot basically writes itself.

Veterans Day
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month an Armistice was signed to end the carnage of World War I. November 11th became Armistice Day cross much of the world but Wold War II caused the day to morph into Veteran's Day instead because what's the point in honoring an Armistice agreement that wasn't adhered to?
"A 'Veteran' - whether active duty, discharged, retired or reserve - is someone who, at one point at his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'the United States of America', for an amount up to and including his or her life."
The men and women who risk or who have given this "last full measure of devotion" are more than worthy of a Day in their honor.
By the way, that railway car used to sign the Armistice in 1918 was later used by Hitler as the venue chosen for the French to sign their surrender to the Nazi in World War II.

The Senate passed a resolution to reopen the government. Now it needs to get a vote in the House and then President Trump's signature. Until those things happen the government is still shut down. Have faith that will all happen but just enjoying the Democrats rightfully blaming Chuck Schumer for this disaster of a strategy with some saying he should be replaced with Bernie Sanders. These people don't know the first rule of holes do they?

The Disenlightenment
Going to have to disagree with this statement. Yes a therapist might say "Time's up" but you cannot be suggesting they provide an open ended schedule. Also many of those in most need of therapy may not have a clergy person, relative, or wise layperson to turn to. Or in some cases these very people may be the cause of the trauma. Never personally used a therapist or felt the need to but I do not assume others are as lucky. Depression is real and mental health issues are also real - if you feel the need for help - seek it!

A deal has reportedly been reached where 10 Democratic Senators will vote to reopen the government. The deal does not include an extension to Obamacare which Chuck Schumer had promised. If the deal is not reached look for Senate Majority leader Thune to cave to President Trump's request to use the "nuclear option" to get rid of the filibuster in which case the CR passes and the shutdown was for nothing. If a deal isn't reached look for Chuck Schumer to face challenges for how he's handled the situation. The deal gets done one way or the other.

Mamdani's campaign promises of free buses, government run grocery stores and other free stuff to get elected reminds me of Joe Biden's multiple pledges to get rid of student debt to pander to young voters. He did this even after the Supreme Court said it was illegal. Biden was able to make those promises because he never meant to deliver - same is probably true of Mamdani's promises.
