More Linky Links

More some stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Steven Pressfield on Children in the Wilderness. Make sure your kids know all about Moses. People are starting to forget.

- Noah Smith on when trying to "shape" AI innovation to protect workers is a bad idea. Well worth your time.

- The Diversity Myth by Peter Thiel. Again worth your time. Some of my favorite writers today.

- Brazil at Silicon Valley. We should be working to get closer to Brazil (and India).

The "Science" is NOT Settled

Brazilian scientists and acedemics write an Open Letter on the "science" of the coronavirus Wuhan Virus pandemic.

Nicely done. Takes an axe to the idea of "settled science."

Is it bad that while reading the article I kept thinking that a prophylaxis dose regiment of Hydroxychloroquine and Zinc could be used to save the upcoming college and pro football seasons? And as a refresher - here's the molecular biology behind using  chloroquine and Zinc.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Army Ranger School is a laboratory of human endurance. Long read but well worth it. This aside jumped out at me, "'That's why I carry a gun. The average human is only three missed meals away from becoming a savage.'"

- Apple likely planning 2020 iPhone SE assembly in Brazil. But if it is still being assembled by Foxconn it is really decoupling?

- The Short, Violent Oil War of 2020.  Article is just a week old and may already be in need of an update. Just as an aside I think the US, Mexico and Canada should ban any imports of oil or natural gas as a way to insulate our economies from such future gamesmanship.

- Nixon Opened China. It's Time to Close It. Won't quibble over the historical reasons Nixon opened China but I do agree with this statement 100%, "It took decades to truly open China and it will take years to close them back off. But we should start now."

- Richard Branson's heart seems to be in the right place. (And the cynic in me acknowledges that Branson's PR instincts have always been strong.)

- "Cartels are scrambling:" Virus snarls global drug trade. Even the drug kingpins are looking to decouple from China.

- Meanwhile in Iran - pulling out of the Iran Nuclear Deal may topple the government. Down with America but can we please trade our currency for US dollars?!?!

- FDA approves magic mushrooms for treating depression

- Cool Belichick story on how competitive Tom Brady is

- Heh Heh

- An effort afoot to make Quebec the 51st State. I hope Parti 51 starts to get more coverage. Love the idea of PM Trudeau scuttling NAFTA mostly to preserve protections for Quebec dairy farmers meanwhile Quebecois organizing to become part of the US so they wouldn't be subject to American tariffs.

- What was lost in Brazil's devastating museum fire

- It is a valid point

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The Revolutionary War officially ended on this day in 1783 with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay signing of the Treaty of Paris. How many high school seniors could tell you what the Treaty of Paris is these days? Not many...  The 1971 Baltimore Orioles had four 20-game winners (Cueller, Dobson, Palmer, and McNally). There may not be a single 20-game winner this season in all of MLB as just three pitchers in all of baseball have 17 wins with not many starts left in the regular season. Times have changed... An X-Files marathon is coming to BBC America. Was the X-Files secretly produced in England by the BBC? To me this is like Showtime running a Sopranos marathon. Or is it strange like The History Channel no longer showing history documentaries... This is awful. Terrible news so sad. If I were President I would scour our National Archives and museums for any Brazilian artifacts or documents to and donate them back to help ease the pain of this loss...  Buzz Aldrin makes his feelings about planting the American flag on the moon quite known.. The Red Sox magic number is now just 18... Am I a bad person for laughing at this?...

Rio Show de Merda Olympics

While it is not true that Rio de Janeiro is Portuguese for Seaside Detroit it is true that American swimmer Ryan Lochte was robbed at gunpoint even though the IOC wants to pretend it never happened.

Strange but true - one of the biggest questions of the Rio Olympics turns out to be, "What color will the diving pools be today?" Clean water of any kind seems to be a completely foreign concept at these Olympics. So is simple chemistry for that matter.

The diving pools not satisfied with being visually baffling - have now brought the sense of smell into the equation as well. Now the question is, "What do the diving pools smell like today?" Yesterday they smelled like farts.

Meanwhile not even freaking walking is immune to doping scandals.

Not to mention the rampant antisemitism and lack of sportsmanship.

The Rio Show de Merda Olympics keeps living up to its name.

Rio Show de Merda Olympics

The first four days of the Rio Olympics have been a virtual American orgasm of success especially in men's and women's swimming and in women's gymnastics. These games might be remembered as the Michael Phelps Olympics. Seriously - does anyone think that this won't be one of the lasting images of the Rio Games? For the less mature this might be the one. That doesn't mean that there hasn't been a slew of strange, unsettling or just plain wrong things happening in Brazil.

Lost in all the other swimming hype Ryan Lochte announced plans to be lead singer in an Everclear cover band post Olympics.

The bad news for Michael Phelps and the other winners is the value of their gold medals has been literally debased. Sad but true - as debased as the gold medals have become they are still less debased than what Russia has done to the Olympic ideals. The Russians aren't alone in not understanding what sportsmanship or goodwill mean. I guess when so much money is involved goodwill and the true sporting spirit just don't add to the bottom line.

The pollution and dirty water isn't even limited to outdoor venues in Rio as this photo of the diving pool attests. Good on Clorox for not missing a great marketing opportunity.

People are taking literal pot-shots at the press. Coaches are getting robbed at knife-point. Rare creatures are sacrificed in attempts at pageantry. And officials even lost the keys to the Olympic Stadium.

Meanwhile in the real world in Brazil - they are going to have an impeachment trial for their President.

Rio Show de Merda Olympics

I've been trying to come up with a catchy name for the shit show that will be the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics - then it hit me "Rio Show de Merda Olympics". Portuguese is the official language of Brazil and "show de merda" (according to Google Translate) is Portuguese for "shit show".

How is this Olympics shaping up as a shit show? Let me count the ways! Polluted water, the Zika virus, unfinished facilities, political unrest, arson, crime, etc., etc. With plenty of blame to go around.

Some problems not even a kangaroo can fix.

You can try to avert your eyes but you know you can't look away from the Rio Show de Merda Olympics!
