Henry V

Have a review of the new Dan Jones book Henry V up on Substack.

It's true that Henry V did lead English troops against the French at Agincourt. But it is bothersome that he may be best known for the speech Shakespeare invented about leading his army into battle that day. Many know Kenneth Branagh's version.

What he historically actually may have said was simply, "Fellas, let's go."

Read the whole thing.

- "All for One and One for All." Food for thought though I'd argue the phrase "Think globally - act locally" my be the more apt saying.

In an all-stock transaction xAI acquires the platform X. The transaction places xAI's value at $80 billion and X's at $33 million ($45 billion minus $12 billion in debt). Total 3-D chess move by Elon Musk. I had always assumed that xAI was just a function of X but it was a separate company all along. X also serves as the perfect marketing vehicle for xAI. What's next xAI to become the answer to Siri for T-Mobile or Tesla branded cell phones?

Today's Executive Orders

President Trump signed a number of EO's today. Here's some of the highlights:

- President Trump signs an EO mandating one day voting for citizens with ID's only. Reminder: Some of the countries that requite ID's to vote

- An EO to modernize the payment systems at the Treasury. Should have been done 20-25 years ago.

- A pardon for Devon Archer. Look for Archer to tell all soon on a podcast now that he has a pardon in hand that wasn't signed by autopen.

- An EO for the immediate release of the "Crossfire Hurricane" files (Russia Hoax) from the FBI. I hope all the names of elected officials or officials from the FBI or CIA are unredacted. We need to know who was responsible for the hoax.

None of these EO's are for Trump's benefit either - they are for the benefit of the American people.

- On the other side of the debate: Are we spending too much on the military? I'd argue the opposite is true - that if you want peace you prepare for war and that much of the world is safe from bullying because of our military might.

Henry V at Agincourt

"Yet of all reported versions of Henry's speech at Agincourt there is one that speaks most clearly to the simplicity of the situation, the apparent state of Henry's mind, and the severe public image he has tried to project since the day of his coronation. The army, for all that the men are weak, hungry, wet, cold, and tired, is prepared to fight. The troops are lined up as well as they can be. Henry has shown his men over and over again what he expects from them, and has tried to instill in them his own belief that God wants them to defeat the French. So the time for grand standing is over. One London chronicler gives Henry the briefest but most believable three-word speech as he sends his men into the fight.

"Fellas," he says, "let's go."...

That henry has inspired his small and weak army to overcome the larger, fresher, more confident, and more glamourous French one is not just the basis for a dramatic legend: it is military fact." - Dan Jones Henry V

Saint Patrick's Day Reminder

Saint Cornelius of Ireland

Though not widely remembered today - at one point Saint Cornelius of Ireland (not to be confused with Saint Cornelius of Antioch) was second in popularity in the Emerald Isle only to Saint Patrick.

Saint Patrick is remembered for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Saint Cornelius was said to have driven the squirrels out of Ireland. This "miracle" of Saint Cornelius later proved to be his undoing. During the Great Potato Famine starving Irishmen and women wished they had tasty squirrel meat to eat and they cursed Saint Cornelius for driving out the furry rodents. In response to this outrage - Pope Pius IX removed Cornelius from the roll of official Catholic Saints.

His traditional Feast Day was celebrated April1st.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Glenn Reynolds: The route continues, but be ready for the counterattack. Like Sherman's historic race to the sea - Trump is having a historic race through the federal bureaucracy.

- Bring back the draft (well sort of). Not a fan of a draft but can't fault the argument here.

- A DC court sanctions climate scientist Michael Mann and his lawyers for misconduct.

- Matt Taibbi's interview of FIRE's counsel Tyler Coward. Long but interesting read.

What a difference in attitudes! The Philadelphia Eagles did not go to the White House in 2018 after many players said they would not go for political reasons and the Trump Administration cancelled the event. Now its reported that the Eagles "enthusiastically" accepted the invitation to be hosted on April 28th by the President. That change in attitude seems to be a good representation of the change in attitude of the country.

Since I'm not getting invited to the White House any time soon - please Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Thanks!

Albert Einstein

Today is Albert Einstein's birthday. Just a reminder that even though E=MC2 is perhaps the most famous scientific equation in history - Einstein never received the Nobel Prize for coming up with it. The reasons for this slight were mostly because Einstein was Jewish. The committee eventually gave Einstein the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his 1905 explanation of the photoelectric effect but that was really too little too late.

As smart as Einstein was it makes me chuckle to remember that when Einstein graduated from our equivalent of high school - he finished second in his class. The name of the person who was valedictorian is lost to history but I couldn't help but think of someone back then saying something like, "Yeah Einstein was pretty smart in high school but you should have seen this other guy!"

This news may have somewhat gone under the radar because of everything else going on at the White House and the world but Donald Trump says that the US is in talks with 4 groups over TikTok and the final decision is up to Trump. This story really doesn't affect me much as I refuse to use the platform or download the app but I am amused that it went from a China being banned in the US top story to now a back page story if that.

- All 50 states ranked from best to worst. Florida gets top makes in both the economy and education. Someone should do a ranking that includes Greenland and Alberta, Canada.

- From the archives: The case for reading fiction. Agree but it's even more important to read for pleasure.

- Excess savings and putting away what you don't spend. I was not a fan of the book Die with Zero and seems those recommending the book are all super wealthy. For myself I prefer the Edward Gibbon's quote, "I am indeed rich, since my income is superior to my expenses, and my expense is equal to my wishes." (HT Steve Layman)

This quote from Paulo Coelho really struck me, "The reward for our work is not what we get, but who we become." The quote explains what and why I do what I do. The daily quotes, the jotting down miscellaneous thoughts and observations and the longer essays are really to help improve me as a person.

That said - I really do appreciate it when you Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Thanks!

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Hatching a Conspiracy Theory: A BIG investigation into eggs prices. Long but interesting read. Egg cartels are real.

- Peter Attia: A casual link between obesity and autoimmune disease. Bottom line - another scientific study showing the benefit of exercise and keeping your weight in check.

- The Death of Europe. "America's poorest state (Mississippi) is now richer than most European countries."

- Some good memes.

Henry V

Currently reading Dan Jones Henry V and enjoying it very much. Should be noted that the England Henry was born into had a population of about 2.3 million people which is about the size of modern Houston, Texas. Henry is not born a prince but simply the eldest son of a Duke.

The King is Richard II who started out humble but quickly became unhinged. "Following the Revenge Parliament - following the purge of the Appellants, Richard's approach to kingship, which has always tended towards the theatrical and capricious, now goes generally unchecked."

"Young Henry had to remain in England with Richard II who banished his father Henry Bolingbroke from the country. While the king while not mad is a dangerous person to know. There is astonishing caprice of a king who calls for God's judgement and then substitutes his own."

"Is this madness or melodrama? Narcissism or simple tyranny?" Whatever it is - it makes for good reading. At the point where Henry just became king and enjoying it very much.

Last night I had a steak dinner, went to dessert and drinks at Applebee's (don't judge me), then home to watch the Celtics beat the Lakers. It was a good night, Then I had to wake up to the clocks "springing forward" because of DST. Way to ruin a good time.
