Who knew? A maverick was a name given to cattle found on the plains that bore no brand of ownership. They got their name from Samuel A. Maverick (1803-1870) a Texas rancher who, for whatever reason, did not brand his calves. Kind of fits since nobody owned Tom Cruise in Top Gun - he was his own man.

Jokes from the Week in News

Have to look at the humorous side of the news - else you might go crazy.

  • Jimmy Kimmel's already dismal ratings are reportedly down 70% since he returned. We are quickly getting to "If Jimmy Kimmel blames Trump for nobody watching his show - does he make a sound?" territory.
  • It’s being reported that a number of people at the DOJ and FBI are threatening to quit over the indictment of James Comey. To paraphrase a quote, “You have to let the deep state people threaten to quit so we know who the deep state people are”
  • With all the recent political revelations the indictment of John Bolton has been overlooked. Then again he’s been an afterthought for some time now
  • Corporate media: “We were lying to you all during Russiagate but you can trust us now - the prosecution of James Comey is political”
  • Wizard of Oz: “Never mind those 274 plain clothes agents embedded in the crowd of peaceful citizens”
  • Headline used to be “Ford to NYC: Drop Dead.” After this week's news the headline could easily be “Trump to NYC: Drop Dead”
  • If you are a pregnant mom with severe TDS and are willing to put your child’s health at risk by defiantly taking Tylenol - you should take a long look in the mirror because I don’t know what to tell you
  • Tim Walz wants to know if pregnant males can still take Tylenol
  • The left turned its back on crime in the 1970's and it spawned some great film making. So where are our great movies coming from the last four years?
  • Business idea: Re-release Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth but as a comedy with a laugh track over any predictions that never came close to coming true. It'd be a hit!
  • Have the feeling the sarcastic phrase "Thanks Obama!" will make a comeback shortly

Player Comparison

This player comparison occurred to me as worth a closer look:

Player A: 73 G, 64.4% Comp %, 15,398 yards, 73 TD, 43 Int

Player B: 63 G, 62,9% Comp %, 14,486 yards, 73 TD, 50 Int

Player A, in case you haven't guessed, is Daniel Jones and Player B is Trevor Lawrence. Statistically they are basically equal but Lawrence was the first overall pick in the draft and looked at much differently than Danny Dimes.

Maybe this is the year that perception changes.

James Comey and the Charges to Come?

Comey famously said, "There are costs to standing up to Donald Trump." Would have been more true that he's paying the costs now for not standing up to Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama when Hillary was clearly breaking the law and his job as FBI Director was to arrest those people.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Chuck Schumer was trying to blackmail the Republicans by requiring about $1.5 billion in wasteful goodies in exchange for Democratic support of the continuing resolution to keep the government open. President Trump said "Fine shut down the government it will give us an excuse to permanently layoff thousands of government workers." Schumer is now trapped. The Americans: The Democratic Experience

"The century after the Civil War was to be an Age of Revolution - of countless, little-noticed revolutions, which occurred not in the halls of legislatures or on battlefields or on the barricades but in homes and farms and factories and schools and stores, across the landscape and in the air - so little noticed because they came so swiftly, because they touched Americans everywhere and every day. Not merely the continent but human experience itself, the very meaning of community, of time and space, of present and future, was being revised again and again, a new democratic world was being invented and being discovered by Americans wherever they lived." - Daniel Boorstin

What if Ernest Hemingway was Typecast?

Ernest Hemingway wrote a lot of stories about horse racing and during his early years in Paris much of his time was spent at race tracks or studying the racing forum looking for a good horse to bet. This side of Hemingway is not widely known mainly because almost all of his stories about horse racing were lost when his wife Hadley had a briefcase full of Hemingway's original works along with the carbon copies stolen off a train.

I keep wondering what would have happened if those stories had not been lost to history. Would Hemingway the writer have turned out very different?

Imagine if some of those horse racing stories were published and they were met with some acclaim. Would Hemingway have been known as the renown horse racing writer?  If Hemingway branched out to other subjects would the critics have told him to stick to horse racing? "Hemingway writes about an old fisherman struggling to land a giant marlin and the story is surprisingly well told coming from a writer who normally covers steeple chase."

  • Question that may keep you up nights: Did Brian Bosworth make more money from those Dr Pepper ads than he made playing football?
  • If the Democrats wanted truth in advertising they should change the Party’s motto to “Tyranny, Rapacity, and Blood.” It’s what most of their positions boil down to
  • Kamala Harris said Tim Walz wasn't her first choice as VP and she could have done better. So much for Tampon Tim being the manly-man choice
  • One of my favorite Robert Redford movies was Three Days of the Condor directed by Sidney Pollack. Can't help but remember that uber lefty Sidney Pollock’s son-in-law was uber righty PJ O'Rourke
  • I'm a big believer in projection so it occurs to me that the Biden Administration was so eager to go after those 92 conservative organizations targeting in Artic Frost for corruption because they knew leftist organizations were crooked and assumed the same was true of the opposition
  • Even more than the appearance of Pumpkin Spice beer - the opening if NHL training camps is a sign the summer is over
  • Josh Allen is great but Tom Brady had 24 wins against the Dolphins, 31 wins against the Jets, and was 33-3 against the Bills. Who's your daddy?
  • If Jimmy Kimmel is really upset he should run for office and see how many people actually agree with his political diatribes. He won't though because he'd no longer be immune from criticism as his Democratic opponents would drag up all the instances he was protected because of his TDS
  • Did things start to go off the rails for Big Pharma when the networks all started to cancel Saturday morning cartoons where they blissfully advertised sugar cereals and were creating generations of future clients? Big Pharma had to pivot to cable news instead.
  • I have a strange sense of humor but am greatly amused by President Trump using the phase "kinetic strike" to describe blowing up drug boats out of Venezuela. Like a Jewish mom describing her son the truck driver as a "controller in the trucking industry"
  • Found myself wondering where the phrase “Cheese it’s the cops!” came from. Then I was wondering if people ever actually said that. Then I found myself saying it every time I passed the cheese section of a grocery store

Long held the idea that if you charged just $0.001 per stock trade that amount could really add up and significantly help reduce the national debt. Round the bill up to the nearest penny and most people wouldn't even notice it. The only people who would really be effected would be firms that do thousands of trades hoping to make money by arbitrage. Buying and holding is what's best for the individual and economy anyway.

The Art of Winning

"After 49-years of telling people how to do their jobs, this book has finally afforded me the opportunity to tell you how I did my job, and to share some of the lessons I have learned from my life in football." - Bill Belichick

On the way into the facility in Foxboro - Belichick had four lines for players to read:

  • Do Your Job
  • Work Hard
  • Be Attentive
  • Put the Team First
On the way out of the facility there were four more:
  • Ignore the Noise
  • Manage Expectations
  • Speak for Yourself
  • Don't Believe or Fuel the Hype
These are all simple rules anyone could incorporate into their daily lives. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it - especially to any Patriots fans

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Think people are coming to the reality that before when people used to shout "punch a Nazi" about anyone who disagreed with them - people didn't say anything mostly because they were too polite. Now after the murder of Charlie Kirk people are tired of being polite - they are angry and those on the far left are finding out people don't agree with them. And that they are the fringe that won't be tolerated.
