Can't help but read that and think the same thig applies to the US military and the US and world economies today. The importance of a strong military.

Unfortunately the news about the devastation from the areas in the path of Hurricane Helene keep getting worse and will continue to do so as reports dribble out. Have a friend in South Carolina who is still without power while the Blue Ridge Parkway has been closed because of storm damage. Unfortunately I fear the death toll from this hurricane is not a number that will be revised down.

Slice of life: Last night was out to hear live music and the band started playing The Who's Squeeze Box and an older couple heard the song and got up and started dancing. I heard the woman exclaim, "They're playing our song!" She did have a nice build if you're curious.

You feel good about yourself until you realize that in the past couple of days Elon Musk has brought more broadband to hurricane stricken people in the Carolina's with Starlink than the government has managed in 4 years and SpaceX's Crew Dragon has saved astronauts stuck on the ISS. No I didn't watch the VP Debate last night. I'll be reading about it and watching clips of it today but from what I've heard JD Vance won the night and the corporate media once again exposed themselves as shils for the DNC. I watched some surprisingly exciting playoff baseball instead.

Pax by Tom Holland
"In 64 [AD] Rome had gone up in flames. That same year, Nero had sent out a new official to administer Judaea. Gossips claimed that Gessius Florus had secured his appointment thanks to his wife's friendship with Poppaea: but it was not long before he had begun to demonstrate a qualification that might have recommended him to Nero even more. 'He stripped bare whole cities: he ruined entire communities.' Wherever there were funds to be extorted, Florus would extort them... So it was that Florus continued with his depredations: and so it was, a mere two years after his appointment to the province, that Judaea had exploded." from Tom Holland's Pax: War and Peace in Rome's Golden Age.
That was some new history for me. Currently reading this and about halfway through it. Enjoying the book but all the Roman names and pronunciations are sometimes tough to take.

Really enjoyed my NFL Sunday and the day went by very fast. Now I'm just waiting for those "free Davante Adams" bumper stickers to appear. Guessing he'll be traded from the Raiders for a 1st round pick (maybe more) once a contender has a top WR get injured or feels they are just one piece away.

Language
Funny but I think if you used the term “feeble minded” today almost no one would be offended but the word “moron” was coined because “feeble minded” was deemed too offensive at the time. Then “retarded” was coined because “moron” was deemed too offensive. Now the word “retarded” is radioactive. Think I’ll use feeble minded. Time is a flat circle.
Of course "feeble minded" is being used to describe Joe Biden these days and nobody is offended.

Two totally random and unrelated observations. Donald Trump recently said that any Jews who still vote for Harris-Walz need to have their heads examined. I'd agree with that. Periodically I like to remind people that I did not originate the term "flotsam and jetsam" - it has been in use since time immemorial. Many people use that phrase - nobody owns the rights to it. In fact I took the phrase from my favorite Lord of the Rings chapter and J.R.R. Tolkien took from somewhere lese.

Thought it might be helpful to share my thoughts on being a paid subscriber on Substack and paid websites in general. I follow many talented writers on Substack but am only a paid subscriber for a few. It's not that I don't appreciate their talents and want to reward their efforts. I do (rust me I understand the work and dedication needed to constantly be churning out posts) but I do not want Substack or my online life to be money-losing propositions. This is why I generally only sign on as a paid subscriber once someone becomes a paid subscriber for me. At the same time - I do not want to charge for my offerings but I do accept paid subscriptions. This is why you also don't see me linking to any sites behind a paywall.
Hope that helps - and after all that please Subscribe, hit the Like button or share the Link. Thanks - it really is appreciated!
