Unfortunately the news about the devastation from the areas in the path of Hurricane Helene keep getting worse and will continue to do so as reports dribble out. Have a friend in South Carolina who is still without power while the Blue Ridge Parkway has been closed because of storm damage. Unfortunately I fear the death toll from this hurricane is not a number that will be revised down.

You feel good about yourself until you realize that in the past couple of days Elon Musk has brought more broadband to hurricane stricken people in the Carolina's with Starlink than the government has managed in 4 years and SpaceX's Crew Dragon has saved astronauts stuck on the ISS. And what have I accomplished? I don't feel jealous or inadequate though - he's an example that we can do better and do more.

That was some new history for me. Currently reading this and about halfway through it. Enjoying the book but all the Roman names and pronunciations are sometimes tough to take.

Language
Funny but I think if you used the term “feeble minded” today almost no one would be offended but the word “moron” was coined because “feeble minded” was deemed too offensive at the time. Then “retarded” was coined because “moron” was deemed too offensive. Now the word “retarded” is radioactive. Think I’ll use feeble minded. Time is a flat circle.
Of course "feeble minded" is being used to describe Joe Biden these days and nobody is offended.

Two totally random and unrelated observations. Donald Trump recently said that any Jews who still vote for Harris-Walz need to have their heads examined. I'd agree with that. Second not sure what was the last film I saw at the movie theater (The Beekeeper?} but people are giving two big thumbs down to the new Beetlejuice while the new Gladiator 2 is supposed to be surprisingly good. May actually see that last one.

Last night was the Red Bandana game in Chestnut Hill honoring the memory of Welles Crowther in the first home game each year after 9/11. The Eagles won 23-19 over Michigan State and BC always seems to win this game if they are favored and make it close if not outright win if they are the underdog.

Posts are a little early today because I woke up after having a dream that I tried to pass Lou Grant on crutches in a narrow hallway but one of his crutches got stuck in my shirt. I said, "Jesus Christ Charlie" and he took exception to being called the wrong name and the fight was on. Once you find yourself in a fight with Lou Grant you just don't go back to sleep.

Thought it might be helpful to share my thoughts on being a paid subscriber on Substack and paid websites in general. I follow many talented writers on Substack but am only a paid subscriber for a few. It's not that I don't appreciate their talents and want to reward their efforts. I do (rust me I understand the work and dedication needed to constantly be churning out posts) but I do not want Substack or my online life to be money-losing propositions. This is why I generally only sign on as a paid subscriber once someone becomes a paid subscriber for me. At the same time - I do not want to charge for my offerings but I do accept paid subscriptions. This is why you also don't see me linking to any sites behind a paywall.
