Conspiracy Theory

Sometimes your gut tells you there is more than meets the eye in a particular story and this is one of those times for me. Please note that I have no concrete evidence to support what I think may be true but I will say it anyway.

I think we found the WMD in Iraq. There I said it.

Let me tell you why I have this feeling and why I believe the above.

I can't help but remember that when John F. Kennedy campaigned for the Presidency in 1960 - one of his big campaign points was the supposed "missile gap" between the US and the USSR. Richard Nixon really couldn't address the issue because he knew the truth but couldn't say anything out of fear of revealing classified information. When JFK became President - he learned the truth that there wasn't a missile gap and that in truth - the US was way ahead in the number of missiles.

Today - the WMD are a big campaign point for John Kerry while Bush and team hasn't really done a very good job debunking the no-WMD idea. It is as if they want to avoid the issue (just like Nixon tried to avoid the "missile gap" questions). Please note that I do acknowledge the possibility that Saddam did not have any WMD but that doesn't seem to jive with reason.

Everyone from Bush I to Bill Clinton to Bush II to the foreign intelligence services of most countries are on record as saying they thought Saddam had WMD. Everybody believed it. What are the odds of everyone being so very wrong? So where are the WMD?

If the US military did find WMD but if they suspected that some of the stockpiles were missing - why would they make that information known to the public? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to keep a low profile on the WMD until the missing chemicals / biological agents were found?

Most of the chemicals and biological agents are complex enough so that properly equipped labs can identify their point of origin. Say the US Army announces that they have found a stockpile of Ricin. Any terrorist that had samples of Ricin from that stockpile may be spooked into dumping their Ricin in the nearest schoolyard and getting the heck out of there because they were afraid that the US authorities were onto them. Just an envelope of Ricin was enough to shut down the US Senate offices. Imagine what a pound or so of the substance could do. Saddam was supposed to have tons of the stuff.

Imagine the outrage that would follow an announcement by the US that they had found the WMD only to have a schoolyard in France be decimated the next day by WMD traceable back to the very stockpiles the US was crowing about the day before. People would be outraged and they would be right to be outraged.

Many times you hear people talk about the "missing WMD". Think about that. Doesn't it scare you? Missing chemical and biological weapons? How come there isn't more concern from the Government? Is it because there is nothing they can do about it so why scare everyone or is it because they're not really missing - the Government knows just where they are? (I know that talking about the "Government" like this makes me seem a little X-Files-ish.)

If the WMD are truly missing - why aren't the Democrats using that as a scare tactic vote getter? Wouldn't the missing WMD constitute both the biggest threat to our country and also represent the biggest failure of the Bush Administration? JFK wasn't opposed to using the "missile gap" to his political advantage (even though he must have had some idea of the truth) - do you think Teddy would show less restraint? Maybe the top level Democrats aren't spouting off about missing WMD because they know it's a dog that won't hunt as an issue. (If they forced Bush to admit that we had the WMD - they would be seen as weakening our security for political gain and the Republicans would have a landslide - which is also why I think we may see information on the "found" WMD leaked before the November election.)

Sure maybe the Democrats aren't hammering on the missing WMD because the pollsters said that the "Bush lied - people died" and "missing WMD" memes turn off the undecided voters who will decide the election.

My gut tells me that there is more to the story.
