Miscellaneous Thoughts
Some miscellaneous lunchtime thoughts...
Abe Vigoda is Still Alive would be a great name for a band. They could even go by the initials AVISA... Just sayin' - the Yankees kept Jose Contreras instead of David Wells. So far Wells is 2 and 2 with a 3.41 ERA for the Padres while Contreras was 1 and 2 with a 9.47 ERA before he got sent down to the minor leagues by the Yankees. Oh yeah - this year Wells has just a base salary of $1.25 million (he can make about $7 million if he wins the Cy Young award) while Contreras will take home $9 million from the Yankees. It is moves like this that show how bad Steinbrenner as GM is for the Yankees... Many people want to take the US to task for violating the Geneva Convention in our handling of the Iraqi prison scandal. My understanding is that the Geneva Convention only applies to combatants that were caught or captured in uniform (the Geneva Convention I believe allows combatants found in civilian clothes or in the uniforms of the enemy to be shot as spies - imagine the outrage if we followed the letter of the law and shot these folks instead of imprisoning them?). My understanding is that the Geneva Convention also only applies to nations that have signed the agreement. Marquis of Queensbury rules do not necessarily apply... The Justice Department is reopeing the case on the 1955 murder of Emmitt Till. The two men accused and aquitted (by an all-white jury) are now both dead. The only thing to be served by this case is pursuit of the truth. In the 2000 Presidential election Bush won Missisppi 58% to 41% for Gore. I'm not a fan of John Ashcroft but this is the right thing to do (and something Janet Reno never saw fit to act on during her 8 years in office)...
