Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Last night I turned the channel with the Bruins losing to the Candadiens 5-2 in the 3rd period. I changed to John Wayne's last movie The Shootist which still had about a 3rd to go. Couldn't help but notice that the gravestone JB Book's ordered had his age as 58 if you did the math. That seemed awfully young in today's years so I looked it up - John Wayne died 3-years after the movie at age 72 which would have made him 69 when The Shootist was released. For comparison sake - Tom Cruise is 63-years old but can you picture a comparingly aged Wayne doing his own stunts in Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning? We live in a different time.

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

New England takes on Baltimore tonight on Sunday Night Football on NBC. Bill Gates and the "Surplus Population"

"If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, none other of my race," returned the Ghost, "will find him here. What then? If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief." - Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol

Bill Gates is much worse than Scrooge. Gates too wishes to decrease the surplus population but unlike Scrooge I don't think Gates is capable of penitence or grief. Also Scrooge never racked up frequent flyer miles going to Epstein's Pedo Island multiple times.

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Fan of the movie The Accountant (and also The Accountant II). Last night I found myself worrying about some plot holes in the movie. The Dana Cummings character (Anna Kendrick) not only knew what the accountant looked like - she knew lots of details about the man. What happened to her? The John Lithgow character also had his whole estate rigged with video cameras - the Ben Affleck character was literally caught on tape killing many, many highly trained and armed men. No idea why these thoughts appeared in my head, Haven't seen either move in a long time. I'm overthinking this - ain't I?

Good King Wenceslas

Good King Wenceslas is one of my favorite Christmas carols. Did you know that he was a real person and that on September 28, 935 AD he was killed by his brother? Now maybe you can think of that cheery fact every Christmas when you hear the tune. At least you can take comfort in thinking no matter how stressful your family gatherings are at least you probably won't be killed by one of your siblings.

Close the Door and Have a Seat

One of my favorite TV scenes.

The League

"It was clear that he [George Preston Marshall] needed to try a different approach in his second season, though, and, always unafraid of making big changes, he moved his home field to Fenway Park. That ended his association with the [Boston] Braves, so he also needed to change the team name. Keeping with the native American theme, he selected Redskins....

July 6, 1933, Marshall said, 'The fact that we have in our head coach Lone Star Dietz, an Indian, together with several Indian players, has not, as many suspected, not inspired me to choose the name Redskins.' He just wanted to avoid any confusion with baseball's Braves, he said. He may also have selected Redskins to achieve a connection with the Red Sox, who also played at Fenway Park." John Eisenberg's The League: How Five Rivals Created the NFL and Launched a Sports Empire.

Had a sneaking suspicion that the Washington based Marshall was creating the origin of the Washington Redskins. In comparison Marshall's views on race and segregation make later Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey look positively progressive.

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

While waiting to watch today's Army-Navy game - I'll be thinking about the SCOTUS 9-0 ruling that DHS can revoke the visas of anyone who uses a sham marriage (like marrying your brother) to deport without court approval or interference. With the millions Ilhan Omar has gained through fraud she can pay the fines easily and be deported to Somalia with millions to spare. It is the threat of possible years in jail that represent the real justice in this case.

What If?

Just read What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe. Some more of the nuggets uncovered from the book include:

  • "I've never seen the Icarus story as a lesson about the limitations of humans. I see it as a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive."
  • If you drop superglue on cotton thread - it will catch fire.
  • A version of the old joke about half-full glasses - "the engineer sees a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be, the surrealist sees a giraffe eating a necktie"
  • "As a rule of thumb, you start to notice compressive heating above about Mach 2 (which is why the Concorde had heat resistant material on the leading edge of its wings)."
  • "The ISS moves so quickly that if you fired a rifle bullet from one end of a football field, the International Space Station could cross the length of the field before the bullet traveled 10 yards."
  • Did not know this but most modern "passenger cars have some kind of artificial speed limits imposed by the engine computer."
  • "If you set out a cup of warn water on Mars, it'll try to boil, freeze, and sublimate, practically all at once. Water on Mars seems to be in any state except liquid."
  • "Which brings us to wingsuits - the halfway point between parachute pants and parachutes."
  • "GPS timing is incredibly precise; of all the problems in engineering, it's one of the only ones in which engineers have been forced to include both special and general relativity in their calculations."
Some of these are facts I did not know or simply just found interesting. Not sure if any of these facts will ever come into play in real life. To be honest some of the questions are so unrealistically ridiculous that sometimes it's tough to keep focused. However, having said that - it was very humorous and informative.

It's that time of year again. One of my favorite things to do is to say "God bless you" to any stranger that wishes me "Merry Christmas." Yesterday we went and got our Christmas tree and later I watched college football games while drinking beer and my girlfriend decorated the tree. We both got what we wanted. Plan to have a post with my college football thoughts later this morning.

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- More evidence of voter fraud and election interference coming from inside Venezuela.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Trying not to get too worked up about the new Jan 6th pipe bomber news because I seem to remember just last month being told that the pipe bomber was a former female law enforcement officer now working for the CIA. Are we supposed to pretend that story never happened now?

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Has there ever been a better way to make money in America than being named a target for Penn State's head football coach search? Candidates reportedly have signed $370 million in new deals with existing institutions. If the Nittany Lions did that for every American we could all have a very merry Christmas.

Instead of waiting on Penn State - please Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Much appreciated.

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Did not address the question of if we are at war with Venezuela because I honestly don't know. Is Maduro still in power? Did he resign? I'll be monitoring that situation. Also did not comment on college football or the latest playoff rankings. Plan a post on that later today.

The League

"In a widely lauded speech in New York in January 1922, Fielding Yost, head coach at the University of Michigan, said that paying men to play football 'robs the great American game of its greatest character-building qualities. The ideals of generous service, loyalty, sacrifice, and whole hearted devotion to a cause all are taken away. The game is robbed of the exhilarating inspiration of achievement merely for achievement's sake.'"

This quote seems quaint given the spectacle of Lane Kiffin abandoning Ole Miss in the midst of the school's greatest achievement to sign a $13 million per year contract with LSU. And Kiffin lacks the achievement of either SEC or national championships.

"At his [George Halas] suggestion, the APFA [American Professional Football Association] changed its name at an owners' meeting in Cleveland  on June 24, 1922. 'I lacked enthusiasm for our name,' Halas wrote, because the word 'association' connoted minor league status in baseball. He suggested National Football League, explaining that baseball's National League was the sports most established, respected circuit. The other owners approved unanimously."

Some history I did not know. From John Eisenberg's The League: How Five Rivals Created the NFL and Launched a Sports Empire.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- VDH: The war in Ukraine - lots of questions but few answers. People can avoid the facts but not the reality.

- Dan Wetzel: Lane Kiffin is many things, but he's certainly no victim in move to LSU. He's not wrong. Fan of Wetzel's sarcasm.

- Keeping a close eye on AI. Everything in moderation - including AI,

- The case against an International Panel on Inequality.  Socialism by another name is still socialism.

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

We're at that strange time of year where the calendar says its December but its technically still Fall. Yet it's getting cold but it's really too early to be winter or Christmas season. It's like a seasonal DMZ. We really should have a name for this time of year.
