Big day as President Trump and China's President Xi meet to hopefully finalize a new trade deal. Reminder the US had threatened 100% tariffs which in effect would have closed off the US market to China's manufacturers. Meanwhile China had closed off sale of rare earth metals and processing something US military and technology manufacturers badly need. But Trump's recent trade and peace deals basically broke the Chinese monopoly on rare earths and may have taken them out of the US supply chain altogether.  The US markets remain. Should be an interesting day.

College Coaching Carousel

Here's one man's guess on how the current coaching carousel for the major programs may shake out.

  • Ole Miss  - they stay with Lane Kiffin but he gets a big pay raise. Why would he move from Oxford? The grass isn't always greener elsewhere (just ask Brian Kelly).
  • LSU - Tulane coach Jon Sumrall. They keep the job instate this time. Joe Brady might be another choice but have the feeling he wants to concentrate on getting Buffalo their Super Bowl ring.
  • Florida - Washington coach Jed Fisch was a Gators alum and was an assistant to Steve Spurrier. If he gets the ol' ball coach's blessing - he gets the job.
  • Penn State - Syracuse coach Fran Brown. They keep the job in the northeast because that's where their best players come from and Brown can coach.
  • UCLA - former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald
  • Arkansas - Jimbo Fisher. It's time to come out of buy-out retirement - just hope for his sake the modern game hasn't passed him by.
  • Virginia Tech - former Penn State coach James Franklin
  • Oklahoma State - Bob Chesney VCU (and former Holy Cross) coach
Some of the coaches leaving existing jobs for new ones will also opened up new jobs but trying to pick those is really getting in the weeds. The open job at Stanford is a bit of a wildcard too.

The Fifties - David Halberstam

"'You can't say anything in a fifteen second speech,' [Rosser] Reeves quoted [Harlan] Cleveland as saying. Then Reeves dissented: 'As a man who has been responsible for five hundred millions of dollars' worth of advertising I know more about this than you do.' There was a pause in their conversation; Reeves was sure he had his man now. 'Harlan' he asked. 'Do you remember that old radio speech of Franklin Roosevelt - his first acceptance speech?' Cleveland said he remembered it. 'And the phrase about the only thing we have to fear is fear itself?' Again Cleveland assented. 'Harland,' Reeves said, locking the trap. 'That's a fifteen second spot.' Now he pushed forward. 'Do you remember the speech Churchill gave at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri? What did he say there?' 'That an Iron Curtain had descended on Europe,' Cleveland said. What else did he say? Reeves pushed. Cleveland could not remember. 'That was a fifteen second spot from Churchill,' Reeves said." - The Fifties by David Halberstam

The Disenlightenment - David Mamet

"Why would rational people vote to destroy their borders, their cities, their jobs, and their children? For the same reason the sick family must tolerate pedophilia rather than its revelation: the co-opted liberal electorate was terrified that any deviation would result in destruction of its protective unit. As it would." The Disenlightenment by David Mamet

Player Comparison

This comparison came to mind when I wondered perhaps fans have biases for or against these players.

Player A: 68.5 Comp %, 7.4 Y/A, 142 TD, 46 Int

Player B: 67.1 Comp %, 7.5 Y/A, 229 TD, 85 Int

If you haven't figured it out - Play A is Joe Burrough and Player B is Dak Prescott. The numbers are fairly equal when you consider Dak is 4-years older than Joe (which explains the more TD's but their TD to Int ration is fairly close).

Leads you to wonder if the difference in perception stems from one being the first pick in the draft while the other waited until the 4th round. Difference in expectations? Or could it be a white vs black prejudice? You determine but there is a bias.

The Disenlightenment - David Mamet

"A representative [Congressman] must regularly raise $50,000 to stay in office. Regularly means every day, and so a politician is a shill. He has no skill other than persuasion and has never practiced it other than in fibbing go his constituents and flattering his paymasters.

The shill at the three-card monte game is hired to pretend to win and then to 'side' with the yokels and show them how to do the same. The politician presents himself as the friend of the voter, but, elected, can only vote at the direction of his owners. He is their employee and absent their favor, has no other means of support." My Politics

I'm a first generation American from one of the Reddest states in the country and both my parents had union jobs. I'm basically what used to be the target market for the Democratic Party. I later changed my party affiliation to "Independent" and strongly believe in voting for the person not a party.

When I vote - I vote for a person if I know then personally and like them. If I don't know any of the candidates for an office often I just leave that section blank. There's no rule saying you have to vote for every office. And if I have a strong preference for a candidate - I'll vote for them too even if I've never met them.

But often I find myself voting against a candidate because some of the things they say or policies they hold are just crazy and I find myself voting for their opposition - even if I don't know them. Many times that's how I find myself voting Republican because the sign above is often true.

Often remarked that neither JFK or Harry Truman, who were once Democratic Party icons, would even be welcome in the Democratic Party today. It may seem like my politics have changed over the years but really they haven't changed much. It's just that in many ways the Democratic Party has gone insane.

College Coaching Carousel II

With the firing of Billy Napier at Florida the carousel not only kept going it spun faster.

The University of Florida fired head football coach Billy Napier despite owing a $21 million buyout. Reportedly half of that money is due within 30 days and there's no off-set provision to claw back any of the buyout if he takes another coaching job. Napier went 22-23 in his time as coach. This was not an unexpected move and ends on the longest running "will they or won't they" situations in college football.

The firing also reminded people it's that time of year again and there's other coaches on the hot seat and still others who will get paid so they don't get wandering eyes.

No Kings Rallies

The No Kings rallies basically turned into a joke. Hope you enjoy:

If you're not getting some of the jokes it's probably because you missed the corporate media "reporting" that nationwide attendance at the rallies were about 7 million. Peace in the Middle East Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Can't help but smile as I think on President Trump bringing home the surviving hostages and bringing Peace to the Middle East. Every world leader - Israeli and Arab, Muslim and Jew was genuinely happy to have their picture taken with the President and give the trademark thumbs up sign. Seeing that - I couldn't help but smile either.

Jokes from the Week in News

Have to look at the humorous side of the news - else you might go crazy.

  • To recap the government shutdown - President Trump signed an order to make sure the military still gets paid on time, Trump funds WIC from his tariffs to continue payments to women and children, and now thousands of government workers are getting permanently laid off. All because Chuck Schumer was afraid of getting primaried by AOC and other Democratic senators jumped off the bridge with him
  • An insider opened an account 30 minutes prior to Trump’s tariff announcement on China and closed it shortly thereafter with ten of millions in profits. Who that insider was now becomes the biggest mystery in American politics and crypto
  • President Trump may already be prepping a book called The Art of the Shutdown
  • Emmanuel Macron’s approval rating has sunk to just 13% in France - pretty bad but that is still more than triple the approval rating of Chicago’s mayor
  • Is it just me or does it seem that reports of fires in EV battery packs seem to have disappeared in the news?
  • The bible says “you will know them by their fruits” - right now the Democrats fruits include Chuck Schumer in the Senate, socialist mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani in NYC, and Virginia AG nominee Jay Jones who professed to wanting to kill children and cops. Yeah hope people get the picture
  • Would have been funny if the NYT instead had bought Bari Weiss’ The Free Press to try and bring back fairness to that organization
  • Senate hearings aren’t cornhole - unless you’re Adam Schiff - then everything is cornhole (NTTAWWT)
  • Reportedly there’s about 12,500 employees at CBS News. Twitter got rid of over 70% of employees when Elon Musk took over and the product improved. Just saying
  • As if the news about Mark Sanchez wasn’t shocking enough I had a dream that Baker Mayfield abruptly announced his retirement. I awoke having to pee. My brain tricked me again.
  • Business idea: giant sombrero hats and mustaches for all those giant skeletons people put out for Halloween

Jokes from the past week's news offerings. At least they were funny to me.

Columbus Day Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Today is Columbus Day but it is also the day President Trump is set to address the Knesset in Israel as some of the hostages start returning. It is a joyous day but I can help but remember that all the still living hostages are males while all the females were raped and murdered. I try to be an optimistic person but it is raining where I am right now.

Yorktown Day Instead of Columbus Day?

Columbus Day continuing to be a federal holiday also continues to be a divisive issue in some places. On one side you have people who say Columbus was a genocidal imperialist monster and on the other proud Italian-Americans and traditionalists. I have a modest proposal with a solution which I think may be acceptable to most Americans.

About this time of year on October 19, 1781 the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown to end the Revolutionary War. America as a free nation really starts with this date. Why not celebrate the date as the new national holiday in replacement of Columbus Day? Yorktown Day could be celebrated on the third Monday in October. The unions would be satisfied since they wouldn't be losing a paid holiday. Italian-Americans couldn't complain since this in no way would be disrespecting Columbus and historically Yorktown is the more important date (beside Columbus really "discovered" the Caribbean not North America). French-Americans would be big supporters of the switch because the French fleet played a huge role in the victory. The only people who might complain are the people who are against glorifying anything that's even remotely militarily related but screw those people.

Why not have Yorktown Day replace Columbus Day?

Don't Think This is Controversial

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Don't think China sending out a threating trade letter while the US government is shutdown is a coincidence. China may have thought with the shutdown the US would be too disorganized to mount a significant response. They didn't count on President Trump being trained in the ups and downs of real estate and thriving on chaos. Chuck Schumer may be responsible not just thousands of government employees losing their jobs but for China making a play for trade leverage.

The Americans: The Democratic Experience

"Function had come to displace perfection. When Americans judged a machine, a gun, a lock or a clock by its ability to do its job, all those fluted columns, ornamental arches, entablatures, curlicues and encrusted scrolls which adorned the best English made machine were wasted effort...

...products just good enough for their purpose. The aesthetic that-was-not-functionable, the ornamental that was merely traditional, had no place in the American scheme. For Americans, a high quality machine was not one that was polished and ornamental, but one that worked." - Daniel Boorstin The Americans: The Democratic Experience

Make sure it worked and then improve, improve, improve has long been the American way.
