Priests Playing Poker

The sins associated with playing cards are nothing new. The Synod of 1404 forbade card-playing by the clergy and in 1423 Saint Bernard called for the faithful to go home, get their playing cards and burn them right in the public square outside of Saint Peter's in the Vatican.

I wonder if that ruling against clergy playing cards has ever been rescinded?  Personally I can't ever recall seeing a priest at a poker table. And now I really want a version of Dogs Playing Cards but with priests instead.

Would it be wrong for a parent to report teachers or others who want to introduce LGBT+ lessons or drag queen story times to kids for child endangerment? Mea culpa - the Celtics did drafted 19-year old Hugo Gonzalez from Spain Wednesday with the 28th pick. Boston was supposed to pick 2nd last night but traded the pick. I lost interest in the draft at that point. In my youth we used to have Red Auerbach trading Rick Robey and 2 second rounders for Dennis Johnson plus a 1st and 3rd round pick. Those trades were consequential. Fitting that today is the anniversary of that trade happening in 1983.

The Red Sox opened a weekend series with the San Francisco Giants last night. They won 7-5 but I did not watch the game. Rafael Devers went 0 for 5 but that's not the point. Rafael Devers to the Giants

Some miscellaneous thoughts on the trade that sent Rafael Devers from the Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants:

  • Many Boston fans are calling this a salary dump and that the Red Sox owner is just a cheapskate who doesn't care about winning any more. The sad part is if John Henry ever sells the Red Sox - he'll make billions doing it.
  • In Rafael Devers defense - who knows what the Red Sox front office or ownership promised him before he signed that big 10-year contract. He could quite simply be pissed that they broke their word to him. Knowing how Boston has treated other players - I wouldn't doubt if this was the case.
  • Dodgers' ace Clayton Kershaw on the Devers trade.
  • Waiting for the Boston Globe's Bob Hohler to do a hit piece on Devers now. This has been John Henry's MO in the past.
  • Reminder that not only did the Red Sox scapegoat and move on from players - they also scapegoated and moved on from Theo Epstein, Tito Francona, and after his team won the 2018 World Series GM Dave Dombrowski. The only common link is John Henry.

The Red Sox have dealt Rafael Devers to the San Fran Giants for a couple of pitchers. What Boston got back is not important to many fans as the fact that Devers was the last player left from the 2018 Championship team and most of the Red Sox moves since then have either been cost cutting moves or head scratchers. Now many many folks are basically done with this team. And I don't blame them.

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Gavin Newsome claims he never spoke with President Trump before the National Guard was called out to protect LA but that was proven to be a lie. Newsome is in the position of trying to defend the indefensible and resorts to lying when called out on it. He's trying to move the goalposts to something where it wasn't his fault. But people are sick of it and the adults are having none of it.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- VDH on Gavin Newsome and his cruel notion of "cruel."

- Jonathan Turley on Democrats protesting the deployment of National Guard troops. Gavin Newsome is despicable.

- This story just makes me smile: IDF will force antisemite Greta Thunberg to watch Oct 7th footage. Good - about time she received an education.

- More on JFK Jr. removing all member of CDC panel advising US on vaccines. I think any media outlet that described RFK Jr. as a "vaccine skeptic" should be forced to defend the effectiveness of the Covid vaccine. If they admit the shots weren't effective - they too should be labeled as "vaccine skeptics."

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

With all the turmoil of the LA riots taking up most of people's attention don't forget that today Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterparts to discuss how China is slow walking the non-tariff trade barriers they had previously agreed to dismantle. I wonder if the Chinese spies caught bringing bioweapons into the US will also be part of the discussions. And how these talks effect our tariffs with China?

- Have drones made traditional warfare obsolete? The US Civil War provided lessons to European nations about the birth of trench warfare and the astronomical number of killed and wounded in battle modern warfare inflicts but they did not learn - so we got WW I. Are nations likewise dismissing lessons being taught in the Ukraine war?

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Kelly Loeffler announced that the SBA will be moving their reginal office out of LA due to the riots and the elected officials clearly taking sides against the federal government. I'd be fine with Loeffler moving the regional office clear out of the state. I mean Arizona or Nevada is in the same region of the country - right?
