Carlos Beltran vs. Freddie Lynn
I thought these numbers were interesting. Here are some totals from Lynn's and Beltran's first 6 years in the big leagues:
Lynn - 718 G, 2647 AB, 819 hits, 456 R, 112 HR, 460 RBI, .309 BA
Beltran - 726 G, 2868 AB, 825 hits, 495 R, 108 HR, 465 RBI, .288 BA
I think you would have to agree that the numbers are VERY similar for both players. Both Lynn and Beltran won the American Rookie of the Year Award but I have to wonder if Lynn playing in baseball crazy Boston and Beltran playing in the relative obscurity of Kansas City has something to do with the disparity of other accolades. By the end of his sixth season - Lynn had been to 5 All-Star games, and had won 3 Gold Gloves meanwhile Beltran has yet to make an All-Star team. Fred Lynn winning the MVP in 1975 may have cemented his reputation but I have to wonder if it is the market Beltran has played in that has cost him some recognition.
EDIT: I should also point out that during this time - Freddie Lynn's OPS+ was huge (somewhere in the vicinity of 140) whereas Beltran's was just 106 (which is above average but not by much). It is probably this that explains the difference in awards more than Beltran playing in KC.
