The Art of Winning by Bill Belichick

"If someone uses AI to summarize this book down to three essential words, I hope they are: Don't, Commit, Penalties.

Over a twenty-year period, we led the league in the fewest personal fouls and fewest pre-snap penalties. Football is a fast game, and some penalties during a play are just going to happen. But penalties before the snap and after a whistle are totally preventable."

Started reading the book yesterday and liking it very much. Anyone who followed the Pats during Belichick's coaching knew disciple and no mental mistakes was a hallmark. The book so far sounds perfect for anyone who coaches sports or want to improve their own performance.

"Never forget that we are all first and foremost Americans. We should look at common goals and seek compromise, rather than conquering the other side, which serves only to divide us. As private citizens, we can do something to alter our perspective. United, we've done amazing things: We defeated fascism, put a man on the moon, and created a cultural and economic empire that is the envy of the world.

Somehow, we've forgotten that. America will never be perfect. It will always have problems. But the only solution is to stay together and find common ground. Stay united. We proved that in World War II, and we can prove it again." - John "Lucky" Luckadoo

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

An historic cease fire has been called by both Iran and Israel in what Donald Trump has dubbed the 12 Day's War. Now the world can wait to see if the cease fire holds while America can turn their attention to the NBA Draft and the beach (or maybe that's just me).

- The false promise of precision. Ocean waves crash into the shore every second but even the best physicist couldn't tell you the behavior of every molecule of water of any wave.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Congrats to OKC on winning their first NBA Championship. Wish I could say it was a thrilling game 7 but after Tyrese Haliburton went down with a calf injury for the Pacers - it became somewhat of a foregone conclusion. Like to say I stayed up for the presentation of the Larry O'Brien trophy (which should be renamed for Red Auerbach) but the 8:00 start coupled with a full day meant it was time for bed instead.

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

We will have a new NBA champion tonight and the NBA Draft later this week on Wednesday starting at 8:00. I'd expect many trades between a new champ being crowned and the start of the draft as many teams will be trying to shed salary and in exchange for draft choices in order to avoid any luxury taxes seems a natural.

Happy Hobbit Day

Not sure why J.R.R. Tolkien picked June 22nd but he did and in America June 22nd is celebrated as Hobbit Day and that whole week as Tolkien Week.

Also be sure to read the first book - The Fellowship of the Ring - to get a better understanding of how Tolkien wanted Hobbits portrayed. As Sam says, "It's the job that's never started that takes the longest to finish." So read it now.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- How the Red Sox-Rafael Devers situation get so messy. Good (and lengthy) explanation. Keep in mind that owner John Henry is the one common factor to all the dysfunction.

- Reminder that the NFL's Sunday Ticket lawsuit is still ongoing.

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The Red Sox opened a weekend series with the San Francisco Giants last night. They won 7-5 but I did not watch the game. Rafael Devers went 0 for 5 but that's not the point. Boston fans' antipathy to the owner and front office stems from how they treated Jon Lester and just got worse from there culminating in the Mookie Betts trade to the Dodgers.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Watched the NBA Finals game last night till around 5 minutes left with Indiana winning by 25. Now there will be a game 7 for all the Tostitos. Funny how we thought the Stanley Cup finals would be a close series but it was a blowout and how we thought OKC would be a juggernaut but this turned into the toss-up series.
