Books I Re-Read

There a number of books I re-read on a regular basis. Some of these books I read almost yearly but all of them I've re-read at least 5-times.

When I was in high school I used to read Trinity by Leon Uris every year. I think it was my way of trying to connect with my Irish roots. However, I haven't picked up that book in 20-years - so I won't count it. I guess you could also count the Harry Potter books but I've stopped having an obsession with them.

- No, tariffs won't fund the government. Don't really buy this argument or reasoning. The federal government budget in 2024 was $6.8 trillion but say 1/4 was waste or fraud and can be cut - that's $1.7 trillion right there. We've all seen the stats showing the top 10% of earners pay over 60% of all taxes and Trump hasn't targeted these folks just the ones making less than $200,000 to have Income Tax removed. That leaves just $520 billion in tariffs which seems doable. And this is just back of the napkin math.

There have been many articles written and segments filmed about how Donald Trump has had an energetic and consequential first 100 days in office. But have you seen anything about the opposite? About what Kamala Harris or Joe Biden might have done instead? Crickets - right? Kamala Harris jut had her first public comments since leaving office and Joe Biden is getting photoshopped into family photos. Who's even in charge of the opposition? Who's providing these talking points the Democrats all seem to be using?

Life Advice

"A learning experience is one of those things that say, 'You know that thing you just did? Don't do that." - Douglas Adams

I think living a good life can be boiled down to three simple rules.

1. First simply try to live life by the Golden Rule - treat others as you'd want them to treat you.

2. Try to make good decisions in life. For the most part you know instinctively a good choice from a bad choice. Try to make good choices.

3. You will make some bad choices - it's unavoidable. However when you do - treat your bad choice as a learning experience and take the words of Douglas Adams to heart and try not to make the same mistake twice.

Rinse, lather, repeat. A good life doesn't need to be complicated.

Djibouti

Recently read the Elmore Leonard book Djibouti and when people see me reading it they all say the same thing:

Them: What's Djibouti?

Me: It's Djibouti.

I may have been a bit facetious but it is really tough to explain. It's starts off describing Somali pirates, pivots to becoming an Al Qaeda terrorist plot, then into a classic Leonard Elmore crime novel. All this with documentary filmmakers Dara and Xavier as the heroes. Lots of good Leonard type dialog and characters.

I enjoyed the book. It was good brain candy when I needed a break from dry history and science. I recommend it.

As expected the top of the NFL Draft went as expected with the New England Patriots taking left tackle Will Campbell from LSU with the 4th overall pick. Campbell was considered to be the best offensive lineman in the draft. Naysayers will tell you Campbell's arms are too short but they could have said the same thing about Logan Mankins who is up for induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame. Naysayers will tell you that's true but Mankins was picked with the 32nd pick not the 4th pick of the first round. Would these critics prefer Mankins or Cedric Benson who actually went 4th overall to Chicago? Arguably Mankins was the third best player taken in the 2005 NFL first round behind Aaron Rodgers (who fell to 21st!) and DeMarcus Ware.

The CIA and the Kennedy Assassination

When the Warren Commission (named after former Chief Justice Earl Warren) was formed - one of the members was Allen Dulles, the former CIA Director JFK had fired two years earlier after the failed Bay of Pigs fiasco. "Another was was the official CIA liaison to the group, Richard Helms, soon to become the agencies director."

"In the seventies, when Congress looked into abuses by intelligence agencies, it found evidence that the CIA and the FBI had obstructed the Kennedy investigation."

"Allegedly, the CIA had aligned with organized crime figures, many sworn enemies of President Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, they teamed up with ant-Castro Cubans in Miami and New Orlans to assassinate the dictator. Helms had personally overseen those schemes."

You also had proven CIA asset Jolly West asking to included in the evaluation of Jack Ruby and Ruby's "break from reality" immediately after a private meeting with West. That's the book that should be written and I would be interested in seeing a Little Big Man crossed with Manchurian Candidate type movie with Jack Black playing Jolly West.

Brave New Robot World

There's been a lot of debate recently about AI possibly being the end of humanity. Many envision a Terminator or The Matrix type future but in reality it may be more like Wall-E.

Think about it. We could soon have self-driving AI powered cars with robots bringing us our packages and food deliveries. We could even have AI driven stories with dead actors recreated by computers to entertain us. Not to mention the sex robots that would cater to our every wish.

We could simply die off by having all our needs met.

Be a Player

The week after the Masters is known by many as the unofficial kickoff of the golf season for many duffers. With that in mind one of the books I'm currently reading is Be a Player: A Breakthrough Approach to Playing Better on the Golf Course by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott. This book was recommended by none other than the great Bill Murray on the Joe Rogan podcast.

The basic premise of the book is no matter how good your game or how good your skill, "Tension ruins techniques." You need to figure out where that stress is coming from and minimize it through "Balance, tempo, and tension awareness."

The book reveals that, "In the kinematic sequence of hitting a golf ball, your lower body moves first, followed by your upper body, then your arms, and finally your hands. Slower tempo often corrects faulty sequencing." You need to make your swing and club work together or as we often say, "Let the club do the work."

Nilsson and Marriott developed a system they call their performance routine. "It's based on the idea that every shot has a future, a present, and a past. We named the parts of this performance routine: Think Box, Play Box, and Memory Box. The Think Box is the period before the shot when your evaluating conditions, making a decision about the shot, and then shifting into a sensory shot. It characterized by analytic thought. The Play Box is the time and space over the ball in which you execute the shot. It's a sensory state - in which, for instance, you're feeling a low center of gravity or visualizing your ball flight. The Memory Box is your post shot process."

For most players their "Play Box" needs to get much bigger while their "Think Box" needs to get much smaller. Don't overthink your shots. And let the club do the work!

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Was happy for Rory McElroy winning the Masters last night. It was abundantly clear by how he emotionally broke down after the winning out how much this tournament win touched him. Now he'll never have to deal with the demons of lost opportunities or wonder if his prime slipped him by and he'd never get another major win. Congrats!

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- SBA institutes new measures to prevent fraud and waste from illegals, children, and the dead. All thanks to information uncovered by DOGE. Most Americans say, "Wait - you weren't doing this already?"

- With all the news about tariffs the new tolls being applied to Chinese shipping may have just as big ramifications. They even apply to firms with just one ship being built in China. Think this will be used as leverage in upcoming tariffs talks.

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Went to see the movie The Amateur last night and enjoyed it very much. The movie has an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes which seems about right. The only thing I'd quibble about is if someone killed my girlfriend or my kids - I'd have no trouble pulling the trigger.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

You are known for the company you keep and the Democratic Party is quickly becoming known for supporting illegal gang members, biological men in women's sports, people who firebomb Tesla's, and the Chinese Communists. Is it that Trump broke them or someone gave them some really bad advice? Either way they seem determined to bring the word "moonbat" back into vogue.

Tariffs, History, and China

Some thoughts on three of the most pressing issues of the day which are intertwined.

I happen to feel that Donald Trump knows what he's doing and is just metaphorically preparing the negotiations battlefield. I would not be surprised if President Trump and President Xi come to a deal that includes them smiling and shaking each other's hand.

I don't profess to know the future but this is how I see the situation. Your opinion may differ.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Perspective: Every war in history started as a Trade War. "Not every Trade War resulted in immediate armed conflict."

- Morgan Housel with thoughts on tariffs, economic history, and market decline. I disagree with much of his assumptions and think much of his thoughts on history are incorrect but agree with his stance of keeping an open mind since neither of us are experts in history or the economy (and certainly not me). And to be fair this was written before the big market rebound.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Don't fall for any of the cries that Donald Trump doesn't know what he's doing authorizing a 90 day "pause" on most new tariffs and that he's "just winging it." Anyone involved in negotiations will tell you first you make a demand and the other party responds. The 90 day window is so these countries have the time to meet with the new Administration for their counter offer which in many cases will be accepted as fair and good for the US. The "pause" is the hammer that if the offer isn't acceptable then these new tariffs go into effect. 90 days truly isn't a long time.

Sunrise on the Reaping

Have a review of the new Hunger Games novel on the backstory of Haymitch's eventual victory.

The new Suzanne Collins novel is a welcome addition to the Hunger Games lore and I really enjoyed reading it. Sure it's brain candy that requires a lot of suspension of belief but it's entertaining and fun brain candy.

Now that we've had Haymitch's backstory (Woody Harrelson in the movie) in this book, coupled with President Snow's backstory in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, along with the original Hunger Games trilogy - you have to wonder if there's anything left to explore in the world of Panem and if this may be the final book in the series?

Sunrise on the Reaping is available now.

1913 Income Tax was Supposed to Be Temporary and Just on the Rich

The 1913 income tax was supposed to be temporary and just on the richest 2% of the country but as soon as 1942 we saw all US households paying income taxes. It may have been an even bigger lie than "just two weeks to slow the curve." (Graph via)
