Gene Hackman

Sadly Gene Hackman, aged 95, and his wife and dog were found dead inside his New Mexico home. Authorities are not claiming any foul play at this time. Here are what I consider his best movies.

1. The French Connection
2. Hoosiers
3. The Poseidon Adventure
4. Unforgiven
5. Get Shorty

There are a bunch of movies that easily could have made the list (French Connection II, Bonnie and Clyde, Crimson Tide, The Conversation, etc) but I really liked Hackman in The Poseidon Adventure and as Harry Zimm in Get Shorty).

My favorite Hackman trivia is the fact that he was the first choice to play Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch TV show.

On the Fourth Anniversary of Rush's Passing

Edit: this is something I wrote 14-years ago but seem relevant today on the anniversary of his passing.

I should amend the title to this post because it wasn't really Rush's book I read but instead Zev Chafets' Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One.

Jet me say off the top that I do listen to Rush Limbaugh but I'd consider myself far from being a ditto-head. I also listen to NPR and sports talk radio but would equally hate to be labeled as a fan of either of those mediums either. I listen to Rush because he entertains and informs. Agree or disagree with him - Rush makes you think. When he doesn't entertain or inform - I turn the channel. Seeing as he's been #1 in his slot for so long - I'm guessing that millions find him entertaining enough not to turn the channel.

Reading the biography of Rush I was both struck and pleased by the fact that Rush is first and foremost a businessman. Not an entertainer as many who would try to minimize him would have you believe. Not an ideologue as the most ardent ditto-head would have you believe either. No Rush is something else.

Joseph Campbell famously espoused that people should follow their bliss in life in order to find the job or path that was right for them. Rush always wanted to be successful as a radio personality. And he has succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Chafets artfully explains this journey in the book.

That's not to infer in any way that Rush does not believe in the things he speaks about on the radio. To paraphrase another old saying, Rush is true not just to his own self but also to that of his father and Ronald Reagan. I would also not try to minimize the impact Rush Limbaugh has had on politics in this country. The political history of the past 30 years could not be written without including chapters on Rush Limbaugh.

None of that explains his success though. My belief is that Rush has been successful because he not only believes in what he's saying but he has fun saying it. So much fun that you get caught up in his point of view and his way of expressing that view. And make no mistake - his is a man's man's point of view.

One stat jumped out at me - Rush's audience are 72% male while Bill O'Reilly's is just 53%. It occurred to me that the same could be said of the men themselves. Rush seems like he's more than 70% real man - interested in football, golf, cigars some sexual innuendo and people making it in this country by the sweat of their own brow. Those things interest me. Bill O'Reilly just doesn't cut if for me. Sorry - I could be 100% wrong but Bill O'Reilly gives me the gut feeling that he secretly tapes Oprah.

The book takes the reader all the way up to the present day and no issue is left out. His hearing loss, his drug addiction and his failure to buy an NFL team are all dealt with factually and evenly.

Reading the book I was reminded of Lance Armstrong who took a medium/sport with low expectations and viewer penetration to unprecedented heights - just as Rush saved AM radio. Older champions took their shots at the new champions - Larry King at Rush and Greg Lemond at Lance. Both famously overcame physical maladies that would have been career ending in lesser mortals (deafness in Limbaugh and cancer for Armstrong). And both have been dogged by the drug issue.

Maybe the most surprising thing gleamed from the book was the idea of Rush getting into politics at 35. It was like learning that Jacques Cousteau didn't lean to swim until he was 40. I heartily recommend the book.

Home Depot Customer Bill of Rights

"The customer has a bill of rights in our company, These six items are, we believe, the only things a customer wants to pay for at The Home Depot:

  1. The right assortment.
  2. The right quantities.
  3. The right price.
  4. Associates on the sales floor who want to take care of customers.
  5. Associates who have been trained properly in terms of product knowledge.
  6. The expectation that our associates will be there when the customer needs them.
Together, those six things represent excellent customer service. If you take care of those things together, you are taking care of all the customer needs. We don't believe that, given a choice, home improvement customers are going to pay for wider aisles and brighter lights. That's not what they come to our store for."

Atlas Shrugged

"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities." Ayn Rand

"Of what importance is an individual in the titanic collective achievement of our industrial age?" Ayn Rand

That second quote is taken right from the book and though that mindset quoted helps explain the villains in the book it also explains Rand's  propensity to introduce numerous characters that ultimately have nothing to do with the plot.

The exposition that goes along with each character helps explain Rand's awful reputation as a novelist. I've gotten through about 10% of the book and I can't take anymore.

Yes you wanted each man be be a combination of man of action and philosopher who knows they have free will to act and they decide to act to achieve something. But each industry doesn't need you to create a character to describe such a man. And then create a character for each industry that's a parasite in the same field.

I felt the need to re-read this book because of so many of the characteristics she is known for are coming true daily in the news. I was optimistic that I could gleam some new insight from a re-reading. Instead I'm going on a strike of my own, saying "Who is John Gault?" and putting the book down in favor of another.

Last night's 4 Nations showdown between team USA and team Canada resulted in a 3-1 victory for America. Have to admit that I love this format and hope they keep it. You actually forget it's an All-Star competition (and it's by far the best format of all the major sports). The one wrinkle I'd add is relegation. Next year have Russia (Ovechkin and others) take the place of whatever team comes in last (guessing team Sweden or Finland at this point). February's Habits

For February I decided the habit I was going to concentrate on was to journal each day and so far haven't missed a day! My journaling habit is pretty straight forward. Each day after my two morning coffees and before my morning shower - I try to journal my goals for the day (other days the journaling occurs a little later than that).

I have 10 things which I've developed over the years that I try to do each day which I then track in my journal. These are:

  1. Sleep - convinced that getting a good night's rest is the key to everything else you're trying to accomplish that day.
  2. Kids - I have four kids and I try to be in contact with at least one every day. That contact can be in the form of in-person, text, email, etc.
  3. Read for an hour each day. Normally more that one hour but sometimes because of schedule even an hour isn't possible.
  4. Write for an hour each day. My blog and Substack account usually make this pretty easy to accomplish. Next up is branching out to longer Substack articles and maybe a book (or two).
  5. Exercise - an hour a day. Try to get at least 1.5 miles of walking and maybe to the gym, pool, or for a hike (harder to do that in the winter).
  6. Work - after being retired this is basically my "To Do" list (more on this later).
  7. Diet - eat right which means minimal carbs and sugar with as little processed food as possible (though I am a sucker for chips).
  8. Debt - pay one bill each day.
  9. Simplify - try to get rid of one thing each day. It could be some clothes I no longer wear, a book, a file, or something along those lines.
  10. Have fun - we aren't hear for a long time so might as well have a good time.
Also firmly believe in the Warren Buffet, Charlie Munger idea of going to bed 1% smarted than when you woke up. So each day I write down what I may have learned that day (with the idea that putting it to paper reinforces the knowledge).

Finally - I write down my To Do" list of things I want to accomplish that day. This helps make sure you are doing the things you told others or yourself that you'd do so that you don't let the day slip away.

My goal for January was to do 20 pushups each morning - increasing the number by one each week until I was doing 25 per day at the end of the month. Maybe I was lazy or the goal too ambitious but it was a failure. Once I did this and found myself doing 70 consecutive pushups each morning but I had the incentive of getting back into the dating pool. Now I live with my girlfriend so don't have that incentive anymore. At least I found myself exercising more.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Tulsi Gabbard was confirmed as the new Director of National Intelligence by a 52-48 vote. It should be noted that supposed Independent Bernie Sanders voted against Gabbard's confirmation. Reminder that Gabbard resigned her post as vice-chair of the DNC over the way Bernie was being treated. If there was any doubt that Bernie was just another bought and paid for politician yesterday's vote laid all doubt to rest.

Still say that the easiest way to increase federal revenue is to simply round up each federal tax bill from the actual penny to the nearest nickel. Sounds like a small amount but those round up. Just ask the script writers for Superman III or Office Space.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up up Substack.

The Eagles routed the Chiefs last night in the Super Bowl. Congrats to all the Philly fans out there (and those who bet on the Eagles). Special congratulations to all who hit their Super Bowl squares. For most this didn't happen despite hours before the game dreaming of how thousands might be spent.

I didn't hit my squares either so make me feel better by Subscribing, hitting the Like button, or sharing the Link. At least now maybe all the praise comparing Patrick Mahomes to Tom Brady will die down.

Super Bowl Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Today is Super Bowl Sunday and there's a segment of the country that's fans of either the Eagles or Chiefs today (I'd put people who bet money on either team as fans for the day too). Think an even larger segment will be rooting for their pool numbers to come in or for the commercials to be funny. Either way - good luck!

Enjoy the day - try not to eat or drink to much and for God's don't bet more that you can afford. Have a safe and happy Super Bowl!

Budweiser Upside Down Clown

In what has become a Super Bowl tradition for me - I'm posting my favorite Super Bowl commercial of all-time - the Budweiser Upside Down Clown. This commercial only ran once because it was so disturbing (butt so damn funny!).

Get Shorty

Read the Elmore Leonard book Get Shorty this week after already having seen the movie a couple of times. Enjoyed both very much.

Warning the plot is very similar but the ending is a bit different in both.
