The Liberation of Paris and the Ritz Bar

I'm a big fan of Ernest Hemingway and if you were to mention to me the liberation of Paris in WWII (August 25, 1944) - the first thing I would think of is Hemingway "liberating" the bar at the Ritz Hotel that very same day.

On the anniversary a thought about that event.

Jokes from the Week in News

Have to look at the humorous side of the news - else you might go crazy.

  • Think good use of AI would be to cover the plays of Neil Simon as if written by William Shakespeare. How cool would it be to have a version of the Odd Couple in iambic pentameter. What would an “odd couple” be called in Elizabethan England?
  • Think John Bolton's casting as a Deep State villain would be more perfect if he had an eyepatch. But perhaps that would be over the top? “Who does John Bolton work for?”
  • Hope some state opens an Alligator Alcatraz of their own but leaves the naming of the facility up to the Internet. I'm looking forward to a Jaily McJailface
  • Admit it that if the Cracker Barrel marketing team's goal was to get people talking about Crack Barrel then they succeeded. When's the last time Cracker Barrel entered your consciousness before this rebrand?
  •  I might be in the minority that’s not upset about Cracker Barrel’s new logo. Then again I ate there once and would not eat there again, If Spirit Airlines were a restaurant...
  • Bed Bath and Beyond says the chain will not open any stores in California because the state makes it impossible to do business there. Many Americans say "Wait Bed Bath and Beyond is still in business and trying to make a comeback?"
  • Rumor is that if Lisa Cool resigns from the Federal Reserve the Democrats plan to try and name Adam Schiff as a replacement
  • Amused by MSNBC being forced to change their name and them choosing MS Now. This is the worst branding I can remember since the diet pill AYDES came out in the middle of the Aids crisis
  • It's interesting that a TikTok influencer known for doxxing ICE agents didn't know their locations when they came to arrest her. Kind of like a psychic getting arrested for fraud and not seeing it coming
  • How soon before you start seeing the Gavin Newsom stickers saying “I did that” on gas pumps in California?

Many a truth is said in jest.

- If it's not broke.

- One of my favorite quotes

The New Family Ties

I have no trouble either race or gender swaps. In fact two of my favorite movies were race swaps - Denzel Washington in Man on Fire and Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. In fact like both movies so much I also read the books (the second one was based on Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch).

Straight up gender swaps can be more problematic because so many studios try their hardest to be woke but at the same time are out of original ideas (take the gender swap Ghostbusters as perfect example). What I'd suggest would be slightly different and not woke driven.

How about a new Family Ties? What I propose is a reboot but with the mom working for Fox News or some conservative podcast and the dad is a liberal stay at home dad. Instead of a Michael J. Fox you could have a female Axela who also conservative, hot, and in to the NRA. Mallory could now be a liberal boy which could set up some interesting girls vs guys situations. The youngest Jennifer could now be a boy who is interesting only in gaming and the online world which gives the show appeal to younger audiences and interesting sponsors. He could become a living product placement.

Why not give it a shot?

Elon Musk, Donald Trump, JD Vance and Presidential Politics

Motto of Google used to be "Don't be evil" but since they ditched it - maybe it could become the motto for Elon Musk's proposed new political party or the existing Republican Party? Or a combination of the two?

Unless you've been living under a rock you're probably aware that Elon Musk's and Donald Trump's bromance has spit over support of the Big Beautiful Bill and the potential increase of the national debt. Musk has gone as far as proposing a new political party - the American Party. But now he's reportedly backtracked on that and may support VP JD Vance in 2028.

On Substack I propose that it could be that pro business JD Vance is the bridge over this political gulf. This isn't impossible - remember JD Vance was once an ardent opponent of Trump but is now his VP.

Jokes from the Week in News

Have to look at the humorous side of the news - else you might go crazy.

  • Vladimir Putin says point blank that there would have no war in Ukraine if Donald Trump had been President. Putin, without saying it outright, clearly lays the blame on Joe Biden and the Democrats. People who put up Ukrainian flags in solidarity and voted Democrat last election hardest hit.
  • For those keeping score - the Democrats have now come out as pro-crime, pro-illegal immigration, pro-Hamas, and pro-higher prices at the pump. When someone tells you who they are - believe them.
  • Getting to the point where stand alone small AI that don't need to be connected to the outside world will be incorporated into most devices instead of IOT. This will be the latest attempt to fool proof devices but never underestimate the ingenuity of fools.
  • Beyond Meat files for chapter 11 bankruptcy. I really hope someone has a headline for this story saying "Beyond Bankruptcy".
  • The latest rumor is that California Governor Gavin Newsom may name Grima Wormtongue to preplace Adam Schiff.
  • It's getting to the point that companies announcing investing less than $10 billion don't even make the news anymore because it's getting dwarfed by other investments in America. In the Bidenomics days that would have been huge news.
  • There no doubt in my mind that Adam Schiff will be going to jail for his well documented wrongdoings. He doesn’t get how disposable he is to those he’d seek to serve. An interesting wrinkle would be if the Democrats vote to expel him from the party and California Governor Gavin Newsom moves to replace him with himself since Newsom may feel he has a much better chance of being elected Senator than President.
  • Sad that Washington DC was better run when the mayor was on crack than it is under the present administration
  • A good nickname for Donald Trump would be President Midas both because of his love of everything colored gold and because he’s dong such a great job with the economy he’s making all the working men and women rich
  • Even though officially it’s the Honest Act you know everyone will think of it as the Pelosi Act. It’s also a genius trap - if you vote against the Pelosi Act that means you are for insider trading. I can almost see the campaign commercials now

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- What Americans can learn from hyperinflation in Weimar Germany. Those who don't learn from history are often doomed to repeat it.

- The dawn of play. Long but interesting read - what is the link between play and society? Is play necessary for creativity? What happens if play is repressed?

- Think the idea of media ride-alongs on DC patrols is genius.

- Glenn Reynolds on the next target for our arrogant, ignorant, "experts:" organ donors. RFK Jr. is right - this is horrifying.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Think future historians will describe what President Trump is doing as a "political blitzkrieg." He's not giving Democrats time to breathe and making them defend wildly unpopular positions on crime, illegal immigration, gangs, spending waste and fraud as well as censorship. It's literally one thing after another. This mid-term election is not gearing up to be like other elections.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- New Jersey's electric bills tripled and could cost Democrats the state. And if they rely on corporate media they may not realize that prices and taxes are going down in the rest of the country.

- Trump take-over renews questions over DC crime data. The numbers are shameful.

- Sad but true!

Wednesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Recently the NFL's deal with ESPN, the WWE's deal with ESPN, and the UFC's new deal with Paramount (CBS) were all announced. Only the recent UFC deal makes me wonder if I should get another streaming service - Paramount+. I'm fine not having ESPN+ for with the NFL or WWE. That's what the money was for I guess.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Trump suggests plan to fully  privative Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. Don't know enough about the situation to have an opinion.

- RFK Jr. claims food stamps are fueling diabetes in America. He said 18% of food stamps are spent on soda and candy and that has to stop.

- VDH: Disinformation and the dropping of the atomic bombs. If you know the facts - there's only one conclusion.

- Gravity, Momentum, and the Potential Energy Field. Won't lie - it will take some work for me to come close to grasping this concept. But like many things it could be perception altering.

As an aside - Unanimous Polarizations would be a good name for a blog, X account, or Substack about political thoughts that you know would make one side of the aisle happy and the other side upset. Or it just could be another name for the corporate media.

Jokes from the Past Week in News

Have to look at the humorous side of the news - else you might go crazy.

  • Think an image of Donald Trump as Jesus Christ with his arms outstretched and a halo around his head could be the new Pepe the frog. People on the right could nod approvingly and say, "See that's what I'm talking about." People on the left could look at it and disgustedly say the same thing
  • People upset that Tim Cook seems to have rolled over for Donald Trump should remember that Cook was also ultimately responsible for approving that bizarre iPhone cat lady ad. Who was that ad supposed to appeal to?
  • Think a good idea for a video series would be to get the rights to all of the old In Search Of shows and to intersperse updated new information disproving most of what was being presented. You could call it In Search Of (Updated).
  • Part of me wishes Micah Parsons or Trey Hendrickson files their retirement papers and says they will come out of retirement only if either the Cowboys or Bengals trade them to teams without dysfunctional owners
  • If you lived in Alaska wouldn't you be in favor of global warming? Just saying.
  • Think the current political situation can be summed up as the Democrats sticking with the phrase "stuck on stupid" while Donald Trump and the Republicans are in full FAFO mode
  • In the not too distance future think people looking to move states will first asks, "How are the schools around here?" quickly followed by "Does your state have a DOGE/FAFO board?"
  • Gentil reminder that some of the Democrats about to be investigated have no moral qualms with having people murdered. Just saying.
  • When Elizabeth Warren says the people she knows want radical leftists running the country, I really hope she calls these people her tribe
  • Nothing makes you feel older than realizing you are actually older than the Corporation for Public Broadcasting which was "born" in 1967 and is now appearing in the obituaries
  • Learn something new every day: the movie The Big Lebowski was loosely based on the writings of Raymond Chandler. Never noticed that before or that Chandler had a rug that really tied things together.
  • Any company that makes big green dildos is missing a huge opportunity if they immediately don't brand themselves as "the official dildo of the WNBA"

Jokes from the past week's news offerings. At least they were funny to me.
